Dudley the pig is nothing if not exuberant when helping around the house. He accidentally vacuums up the cat, knocks over a vase of flowers when dusting in roller skates, and turns the sink into a bubble machine as he tries to wash the dishes. His heart is in the right place, though, and no parent could resist that cheerful smile and zeal for helping out. The youngest readers will love lifting the flaps to see what disaster will befall Dudley next. David Wojtowycz's bright, bold illustrations are full of color and childlike charm. Each two-page spread shows the text on the left--variations on "Will you vacuum the hallway?"--and the interactive picture on the right. Mischievous children will giggle on the final page when they see innocent-looking Dudley sitting on his bed after "cleaning" his room. What's that under your bed, though, Dudley? Dudley makes another less-than-refined appearance in Wojtowycz's
Dudley's Birthday Party! (Ages 3 to 6)
--Emilie Coulter
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Two stories about an ever-smiling, rotund pink pig with nasty habits. In Dudley Helps Out!, he does anything but. He knocks over furniture by roller-skating while dusting and cleans his room by cramming all of his toys under the bed. In Birthday Party, when asked if he is going to share his cake, he responds with a loud "NO!" Lifting the flap shows Dudley serving his three guests minuscule slices while hoarding the rest for himself. An illogical progression of party events ends with the words "Happy Birthday, Dudley!" and the final flap reveals his three friends (a pig, a rabbit, and a duck) blowing party horns and saying "Surprise!" Although the bright, childlike illustrations utilize bold, eye-catching colors and are developmentally appropriate for the intended age group, there isn't much else to like about these books. Jeannette Rowe's delightful and appealing Whose Nose?, Whose Ears?, and Whose Feet? (all Little, Brown, 1999) are far more successful lift-the-flap books.
