5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Synopsis, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
Do you or someone you care for have MS? Learn to DEAL with it without giving in to any 'victim'-mode. This little book very, very calmly deals with most of the wide-ranging symptoms that MS-ers are challenged by. In short, short chapters, it describes the 'what', the 'why', and then provides insights into various 'hows' to deal with each symptom. Where possible, it gives alternatives and progressive suggestions, and includes discussion of different medications with the positives and negatives included. There was a lot set out that I didn't know anything about, so it was very helpful. It does not purport to be an exhaustive reference work -- it is more like a brisk, informative conversation with a knowledgable physician. I think that, besides helping one understand the 'nitty gritty', it will probably be an excellent book to take to the next doctor's appointment as a springboard for better discussion. I was able to read this book in one sitting (while I was defragmenting my hard drive!) and I decided to light a candle of approval here at Amazon so that other readers would have an idea what this book is like. Again, it is not a textbook or tome; it is insight. It also has a great glossary of terms that you come across in "MS World", and even provides illustrated exercises and methods of moving around. And not a drop of pity or melodrama, just reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a medical professional with MS, April 9, 2002
By "unknown_nurse" (Desert Hot Springs, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This book should be in the library of every person with MS. I have often recommended taking this book to the neuro or a GP when discussing a symptom and treatment.

Dr. Shapiro has long been considered a foremost authority on symptom treatment. Each time he has produced a new edition I have replaced my copy of this book. Though I am no longer a working medical professional, I keep up on MS research. And this man knows his business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive and easy to read!, January 28, 2001
By "malecbooks" (Laurel, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This third edition is very up-to-date with the latest of the A-B-C drugs being discussed. Miriads of other prescription drugs used for symptom management are described. It is organized by symptom, each having its own specific chapter. There is a great glossary and appendix on stretching and transfer techniques. A great way to learn the things you need to know to have an intelligent conversation with your doctor. Very informative to anyone at any place along their MS path. I know...I've been puttin' up with MS for over 10 years.
