2.0 out of 5 stars Not very useful, August 28, 2001
The amount of useful information in this book could have been condensed into a booklet of a few pages. I'm sure it must be thrilling to channel material directly from someone who claims to be one of the inventors of Reiki, but the authors essentially use their book to postulate that they have the real secrets of Reiki and that attending their workshops is the only way to get the correct techniques as they were originally intended. The only new information that the book provides is based in common sense and obvious to anyone who has practiced much, anyway: First, clients must accept responsibility for their own health --Reiki is intended to be a helping step, not an ongoing "crutch" for people who want someone else to "fix" them. Second, the symbols don't inherently contain any power, they are only a technique for the practitioner to focus his or her energy. Neither of these ideas are a big surprise to anyone who works with the body and healing energy, of any technique or school, whether it is Reiki, Healing Touch, or even simple prayer therapy. It isn't that I dislike this book so much, it just isn't particularly helpful. And if the authors are going to condemn the Usui school for using Reiki to make money, they should at least provide a little more useful information in the books they are selling, rather than promote their own business endeavors. The irony is too obvious to ignore.
