Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Born in England in 1940 (as Marielle Hadengue), Moon made her name in haute couture fashion photography with luxurious and mysterious compositions. This gorgeous volume brings together that work with her other images in an exciting first retrospective. In the fashion work, her models are studious and disengaged, often turned away or intentionally blurred themselves transformed to a compositional element. Images of animals, portraits, still lifes, and wonderful landscapes both rural and urban fill out her oeuvre. In her black-and-white images, Moon (also a filmmaker) masterfully tends the edges of darkness where the merest hints of light create detail, texture, and form. Her tasty color work is highly saturated and grainy. Innovative, witty, and seductive, Moon's photographs draw the viewer into a dream world, at once soothing and vaguely troubled like the opening of a storm. Everything a great art book should be, this volume makes apparent Moon's original contribution to photography over the last 30 years. Highly recommended for large public and academic photographic departments, the book may be of special interest to clothing design/fashion collections. Debora Miller, Minneapolis

Product Description

A fashion and commercial photographer since 1968, and also a filmmaker, Sarah Moon is known for her dreamlike images and her representation of femininity as free from time and context, as living in a fairy world. Although Moon has been a major participant in the world of fashion for more than three decades, she has carefully carved out her own niche -- a signature style that dispenses with the erotically suggestive poses favored by many of her male counterparts in favor of the emblems of luxury and nostalgia. Mystery and sensuality are at the core of Moon's work, whether she's photographing haute couture, still life, or portraiture. In this book, Moon's first major retrospective, viewers will be treated to a visual tour-de-force, showing all the genres she has explored in her rich and diverse career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely breathtaking!, October 16, 2001
Recently introduced to just a taste of Sarah Moon's work, I've been on the hunt for more without any luck... until now. After searching for past editions of her books, only to find seemingly unobtainable used copies, I was even more intrigued to see the long awaited release of Coincidences. Well, my wait has ended. Finally being able to feel the weight of a serious body of work encased in the refined texture of the robust cover, I carefully started turning the silky smooth pages. Stunning. Image after beautiful image held my gaze as my heart started to race in anticipation of the next. Every piece holds true to her glowing reputation to produce visually textured, emotionally layered works of art. The pace and flow of the eleven "chapters" will keep your thirst for beauty fully quenched. Brilliant forms of vibrant color adorne the works in chapter 6. Oh, to see through the eyes of Sarah! The supreme quality, not to mention the quantity of works, makes this fabulous find cheap at twice the price. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent images, POOR QUALITY cover!, April 13, 2002
By A Customer
The previous reviews cover the quality of the images in this book. I cannot say it any better. So, I'll touch on one little pet peeve I have.

I'm puzzled that Arena Editions would release this book with such an inferior cover. The compressed, uncoated cardboard cover just invites disaster! Not only is it prone to staining, it is also VERY susceptible to moisture and denting... much more than the average hardcover

I know, I know... "you should be careful when handling books... blah blah blah" That doesn't do away with the fact that this book demands to be handled! The images are too good to let this simply be a "coffee table" book. This is a sure fire page turner that must be protected in some way.

Before purchasing this book, I STRONGLY suggest you also purchase some soft cotton gloves and a book cover of some sort; and most of all, don't out it on the coffee table!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars With unusual and absorbing drawings, April 10, 2002
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This weighty and uncluttered coverage of artist Sara Moon's unusual and absorbing drawings are each centered on a white page providing excellent contrast and a uniform approach to both her black and white and color works. These take the form of juxtaposed sections of color and old-fashioned daguerreotype-type images, all the more striking for their organization and presentation. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much technique
I wanted to like this book and I probably would have liked it more if it had been about 1/3 as long. The technique weighs down the images and I could only take small doses. Read more
