Product Description
Foreword by Thomas Lickona. Cultivating Heart and Character is an indispensable guide for crafting a good life. Full of original ideas and practical strategies, it presents the stories, thoughts, and shared desires of educators, leaders, parents and students who are searching for an education that nourishes the heart as well as the intellect. In this comprehensive book, the authors recognize the desire to love and be loved as the fundamental force in the shaping of character. Building on this insight, they establish that the universal desire to live a meaningful life can be fulfilled through three common aspirations: attaining personal maturity, building and enjoying satisfying and long-lasting relationships, and making contributions to the larger community. These three life goals in turn become a framework for a balanced and holistic education in character and emotional intelligence. Chapters include discussions of marriage, family, and community as well as school-based character and life skills education. Cultivating Heart and Character offers fresh perspectives for everyone working to improve their own lives and make a difference in the lives of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cultivating Heart and Character, October 22, 2001
By Mary Katherine Robredo (colorado springs, co United States) - See all my reviews
I loved this book! It is full of such heartwarming stories
and presents research in such an enlivening way. I have added this book to the collection I keep on my bed table and it always inspires me and seems to be just what I need when I look through it. As a therapist, family educator and most importantly, a mother of young daughters, I highly recommend this book to any person who hopes to contribute to the education and character building of a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cultivating Heart and Character, August 15, 2001
By "tweepy" (New York) - See all my reviews
This book give readers the answer to the question "Why is character education important?" It should be read by all educators, every single parent, and everyone who hopes to be a parent someday. To my knowledge, it is the most comprehensive book out there to date on the topic of character education. Readers will learn about programs that have been implemented all over the country to help students "cultivate heart and character." It provides a wealth of information about what is currently happening in the field of character education. After reading this book cover to cover I felt inspired, energized, and determined to make a difference! Read this book, and then GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeper than usual, April 19, 2002
By A Customer
A deeper look at what it takes to raise respectful, responsible kids. Not the "10 Quick Steps to.." kind of thing, but a thoughtful and comprehensive discussion of developing good character thoughout all of life and with the help of family, school and community. Offers badly needed theory to the whole character education movement that is popular right now. A philosohical book yet very practical, a spiritual book without being religious. Some parts are really beautiful to read. Inspiring for teachers and perfect for administrators or for a graduate student studying education who want to understand the moral side of education.
