1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Ice that Sprian, January 15, 2008
I own a copy of this book and have applied certain aspects of it to injury and have found certain serious problems with the methodology. The author stresses the use of ice for sports injuries rather than heat. This is under the premise that heat causes further injury by further increasing swelling, an agreeable assumption. The standard RICE outline is adhered to (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). This is the standard medical mantra, which we would have to follow as gospel since the experts ubiquitously promote RICE. Although the author says that this is the best "natural" sports medicine book ever, the natural part is more on the supplement part rather than from a deviation from standard RICE methodology.

A question we need to be asking is whether icing injuries is natural. And are there more natural or more effective alternatives? Also, vitamin and enzyme supplementation is stressed, yet there are natural practitioners who argue that vitamins synthesized or extracted from their context of food or herbs is harmful and unnatural.

I believe that other natural methods must make us re-evaluate RICE. I suggest Tom Bisio's "A tooth from the Tiger's Mouth." Bisio is a long time martial artist turned Chinese Traditional Medicine practitioner who when training under a Chinese master in Taiwan was scolded for suggesting to put ice on a sprain. "Ice is for dead people," said the master. Specially prepared liniments, and oils are used to get the injured athlete back and going sooner and safer without ice.

Also, although I have not read the book, I expect to be purchasing "Don't Ice that Sprain," by coach Dick Hartell and Michael Shimmel. Their videos on the web are quite enlightening. Ice slows circulation and contracts tissues slowing healing and tissue metabolism. Coach Hartell uses elastic traction to expand and remobilize the ankle without ice.

So, go ahead and buy "The Best Natural Sports Medicine Book Ever," if you want, (the exercises may be the best part of the program) but there are better natural alternatives out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT MAN, March 13, 2003
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book, and you might want to also check his other book out, ten natural treatments you haven't heard of until now. I can not tell you enough about his knowledge on everything from exercise, sports medicine, sexual health, and beyond. You will learn more from his two books than from ten natural healing books by M.D.'s and other authors, I suggest you buy these books. ...
