Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-This entry in The Unknown Civil War Series examines the Battle of Gettysburg. Each of the hour-long tapes is devoted to the corresponding day of the pivotal battle. The limited collector's edition is comprised of three videos detailing the battle itself, and a bonus tape featuring a roundtable discussion of the battle by Civil War scholars. The series gives fresh insight into familiar material. The first three tapes, narrated by Stephen Lang, combine period photographs, film, clips of Civil War reenactors, paintings, and film of the battlefields as they look today to present the battle. Skillful camera work and editing give the overall effect of motion despite the use of relatively static media. Day One examines the events that led up to the confrontation at Gettysburg and the personalities involved. Day Two looks at Meade's fishhook defense, the wheatfield, and the struggle for Little Round Top. Day Three follows the troops during Pickett's dramatic charge, the fight for Culp's Hill, and the Confederate's eventual withdrawal. It examines the aftermath of the battle both in relation to the outcome of Civil War and the impact of the battle on the American psyche in the ensuing years. The "bonus" tape features a discussion by eminent Civil War historians. Drawing from contemporary documents, they discuss the impact of the battle on the War and the soldiers involved. Newspaper accounts, soldiers' letters and diaries, and memoirs are cited. Particularly interesting are the panelists' comments on the value of documents (e.g., letters and diaries of the day as opposed to newspaper accounts and memoirs), of history's changing perception of events, and how the reputations of certain generals were made or destroyed in the battle. The series is an excellent tool for giving middle and high school students an in-depth understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg, its impact on the Civil War, and its continued impact on America today.
