Pedder subtitles her medical tale of terror One Woman's Story of Triumph, and triumph it is. She first survived treatment for breast cancer, only to learn that chemotherapy had fatally damaged her once-healthy heart, creating a condition called cardiomyopathy, a thickening and inelasticity of the heart walls. A woman who, ironically, had kept a close eye on her diet, as well as those of her husband and growing children, Pedder then was subjected to a round of tubes and IVs, to medication after medication--and her only response was further weakening. Bedridden, she survived two near-death experiences and finally faced death with increasingly detached stoicism. Then she was offered a last hope--a new heart. Since her successful transplant, she has become a spokeswoman for organ transplantation. Further, though on a regimen of selective immune-response suppressants for the rest of her life, she swims daily and enjoys a healthy, active lifestyle many may envy.
