She first survived treatment for breast cancer, only to learn that chemotherapy had fatally damaged her once-healthy heart, creating a condition called cardiomyopathy, a thickening and inelasticity of the heart walls. A woman who, ironically, had kept a close eye on her diet, as well as those of her husband and growing children, Pedder then was subjected to a round of tubes and IVs, to medication after medication--and her only response was further weakening. Bedridden, she survived two near-death experiences and finally faced death with increasingly detached stoicism. Then she was offered a last hope--a new heart. Since her successful transplant, she has become a spokeswoman for organ transplantation. Further, though on a regimen of selective immune-response suppressants for the rest of her life, she swims daily and enjoys a healthy, active lifestyle many may envy.
