Editorial Reviews

Review

"I could not put this book down; it is an extraordinary portal to the natural world. Don Goodman writes with the soul of a poet, the knowledge of a truckload of professors and the humor of one who has kept his heart light and mind open despite the burdens they carry." --Leslie Sahler, M.S.W.

Product Description

Summer of the Dragon provides the perspective of a hard-wired naturalist on the natural world and wild Florida in particular. It describes the author's lifetime of interactions with animals and plants...from the magical boyhood incident when two snake eggs hatched in his hand to the loss of his right arm to a horrifying attack by a giant alligator. Thrown into the mix are laugh-out-loud tales of student misadventures, colorful eccentrics, British soldiers cooking up a batch of psychotropic greens at Jamestown and a float trip down Florida's grand Ichetucknee River that became "the Donner Party afloat." If you don't know bastard toadflax from devil's dung, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind the stories told, December 13, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is a great book. Even more interesting, if you know Don, is that there are many more related stories behind the ones he tells. I look forward to a second book ... yet, if you don't buy a copy of this one ... where do you get the money for self-publishing? Don is as crazy and bizarre as his stories ... and, he is not exaggerating when he writes ... well put together ... I laughed at every one. fortunately, he did not include me or other family members in these accounts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good local history, May 22, 2008
By KB's Mom (Gainesville, FL United States) - See all my reviews
Having grown up in Gainesville, FL, the area where this book is set, I really enjoyed reading about all the local history and the founding of Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. The book is very interesting and makes you think. There were many facts I did not know about the maintenance of the Alligator population in Florida. I really enjoyed it!
