Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Written for SAP consultants and customers, this guidebook helps you to set up the authorization concept in the R/3 System. Using step-by-step instructions, it shows you how to use the Profile Generator during and after the R/3 implementation.

From the Author
This guidebook is designed to help you set up the authorization environment in the customer system using the Profile Generator (PG). It explains what you need to know to perform this task and helps you use the standard tools provided with your system.

This book does not cover authorizations for add-on components or New Dimension products. It also does not cover Internet-related authorizations (encryption, authentication, and credit card security).

This guide refers to Release 4.6A/B of the SAP R/3 System. All screenshots are from Release 4.6A unless otherwise noted.

The structure of this guidebook matches the setup of the authorization concept, progressing from a new R/3 installation all the way to an upgrade. If you upgrade from an older release see chapter 14, Upgrade, for more information.

About This Guide

This guide provides you with the following:
- The big picture (security and the authorization concept in R/3)
- Tasks you need to perform during and after installation of R/3 to facilitate the use of the Profile Generator
- Tasks you need to perform after an upgrade of the R/3 System
- All the essential steps for security implementation using the PG and Central User Administration
- Tasks to prepare for going live
- Appendixes with the most important SAPNet-R/3 Frontend notes for authorizations and the most frequently asked questions.

Who Is This Guide For?

This guide was designed for the following people using the Profile Generator either in an implementation project or as an ongoing reference:
- Basis Consultants who install R/3 and set up the security at customer sites
- Application Consultants who want to start using the Profile Generator as the basis for their customer security implementation
- Customer IT and help desk personnel

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - But now getting obsolete, September 14, 2006
If SAP would publish made easy guides for all their modules they could kick the worlds software a**...This book is as good as the best 'step-by-step' books put out by Microsoft. Why SAP can't put out documentation as-good-as Microsoft is beyound me...they are really missing the boat (or perhaps the point of poor documentation is a full-employment scheme for expensive consultants...Note: if you think the online help provided with SAP is any help, think again, it's for the most part useless...SAP help screens look like they were designed by 'educational experts' who wring any sense of meaning or context from a subject to derive an abstraction which provides only 'when you click this, this screen comes up' duh...I know that, so what does it mean?...what does the screen info do? How does it fit into the context?...ya gotta hope there is a book, or hire a consultant)

This is a great book that together with the SAP Press book 'SAP Authorization System' is an essential to my understanding SAP authorizations. Note that I went to the SAP CA940 class on authorizations and the instructor didn't even mention these books (and for the several thousand dollars the class cost you'd think SAP would provide them for free.)

The only problem is the book is for 4.6A/B...and many customers are on 4.6C, and now heading for ECC6.
Special note: this book is available as a PDF...and if you shlep around on the internet long enough perhaps you could find a place to download it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Has potential needs more indepth content, June 1, 2000
By A Customer
This book follows the traditional format of SAP Made Easy Guides. It covers Authorizations fairly well but still lacks the complete content that Authorizations Administrators need. 75% of the Authorization features are covered, hopefully the next version will include all the features. Yes, the book is useful, but not needed if you already have an excellent understanding of the tool in prior versions of SAP
