Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

At 7 years old, Darrell Gwynn was piloting a scaled down dragster designed and handbuilt by his father, Jerry. By 17, he had earned his first professional competition license, and within 12 years, by 1990, Darrell had worked his way through the ranks to become one of America's hottest NHRA Top Fuel drag racers. Then, on Easter Sunday 1990, his car broke apart in a violent fireball at more than 200 mph during an exhibition run. Darrell suffered a broken neck, lost his lower left arm, and retained only limited use of his right arm. Confined to a wheelchair, he would never race again. But rather than slow Darrell down, the disabilities provided yet another challenge that he was determined to meet. This is Darrell's personal and revealing story, beautifully illustrated with previously unpublished photos from his family scrapbooks. Detailed descriptions of important races and commentary by Darrell himself provide an insider's perspective on the technology and teamwork behind a winning Top Fuel car. The experiences recounted tell a fascinating tale of one man's journey to the top of his sport, and a second courageous journey back from devastating injuries to lead a new, full life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for all race fans!, December 15, 2003
By Kyle Arneson (Charlotte, NC USA) - See all my reviews
My dad, Erik Arneson, is one of the best writers ever. After reading this book of "Triumphs and Tragedies" you will feel as if you have known Darryl your whole life. This book gets you so interested that you wont want to tear yourself away. I read a good chunk of the book in one sitting. I hope my dad (Erik) writes another highly fascinating story.
