5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Little Book Will Entertain You For Hours, September 21, 2007
By James N Simpson (Gold Coast, QLD Australia) - See all my reviews

The latest entry to the market by the Ripley's team is a thick, heavy square shaped collection of pages about odd things covering a range of topics from around the world and even beyond it. The reader is taken on nine different journeys starting with Ripley's World where the history of the man himself is explained in great detail along with the 27 museums spread across nine countries throughout the world. Some interesting pictures of the Niagara and Branson buildings. Next we the reader are taken to the chapter Beyond Belief. Here topics such as miraculous survival (heaps of entries where people have been impaled by various objects and survived complete with photographs), plus your regular Ripley's pierceings, people carrying heavy stuff by various body parts, cats surviving in washing machines stuff like this.

We then move onto Amazing Earth where natural phenomenon are explained as well as towns where people live underground and the like. Body and Mind is the next chapter presenting more piercings, fertility statues, little kids weightlifting, lips pierced with big objects and the like. Wonders of Science covers online auctions, man made body parts, gene alterations, breeding different animals together, robots, inventions and so on. Next the reader journeys to Extraordinary Animals, which is pretty self explanatory looking at some of the adaptations of different animals. Fun and Games deals with the bizarre things people collect, biggest shoe ever made and things like this. Arts and Entertainment looks at sculptures and even functional devices made from rubbish, jellybeans well a large range of things along with movies, plays and the like. The final chapter Beyond Understanding takes the reader to outer space, aliens, ghosts and the like.

An interesting read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is there no end to the Unbelievable?, May 7, 2007

I have been a big fan of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" ever since I was a kid. I followed the Ripley cartoons in the newspapers and for my 10th birthday I got the hardcover "Believe It or Not!" in 1945. It had actually been published in 1930.Ripley made his first "Believe It or Not!" cartoon about amazing sport feats when he faced a slow day while working as a sports colmminist for the New York Globe. So,this whole world of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" actually started by accident....Believe It or Not! Although my local newspaper doesn't carry these cartoons any longer; and it seems that most newspapers have forgotten who their readers are. I still follow Ripley's and Dick Tracey on the Websites. Thank God for the Net. You really gotta wonder why we continue to buy those daily papers. One day I'm going to find the only strip I follow in the paper,Doonesbury, will be dropped; but not to worry,it's also on the Net. If I find my name in the obits one day;I swear I'll quit my subscription ,alltogether;..."You'd Better Believe It!
At least we still have these wonderful books Ripley's keep publishing.I look forward to each new one and buy them all. I have a large number of Ripley books, including those little paperbacks ,which are real gems.
One of my favorite Ripley books is; "Ripley-The Modern Marco Polo- The Life and Times of the Creator of 'Believe It or Not'" by Bob Considine ;of Baseball fame and a great pal of Ripley ;published in 1961. It describes the life that Ripley led, which was as unbelievable as his cartoons. It's worth the effort to find it.
This latest "Believe It or Not! is another excellent production in the long enjoyed series of publications. The Ripley people have maintained the highest standards in bringing the world's greatest oddities to us;and these high standards are continued in this book.
If you are a Ripley Fan;don't miss it!
