Captain Scott Null and Joel McBride draw on their vast experience in both kayaking and fishing to give the new kayak angler a solid foundation of skills and concepts that will allow a safe and comfortable entry into the sport. Scott and Joel also offer a wealth of tips and tricks that will help more experienced anglers get the most out of their time spent on the water.

YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

  • All the necessary equipment
  • The fundamentals of kayak fishing
  • The essential strokes and paddling techniques
  • Bait and lure fishing from a kayak
  • Fly fishing from a kayak
  • Fighting and landing fish from a kayak
  • Freshwater kayak fishing
  • Saltwater kayak fishing
  • Kayak fishing safety

"Read this book carefully and pay attention to what Scott and Joel have to say. You can become an expert kayak fisherman in a short time." - Everett Johnson, Editor, Texas Saltwater Fishing Magazine

About the Author

Captain Scott Null grew up fishing the waters of the Galveston Bay Complex, and has hunted and fished on the Texas coast his whole life. Spurred by his adventurous spirit and desire to explore new waters, he has fished all along the Gulf Coast from the southern tip of Texas to the Florida Everglades.

Scott spends most of his time in the marshes, bayous, and flats of the Upper Texas Coast, where he uses a kayak to stalk shallow foraging redfish. When he isn't fishing for himself he shares his love of the outdoors and extensive knowledge with others through his guiding company Let's Go Fishing.

Scott is a retired homicide detective who worked for the Houston Police Department for twenty-one years. He writes a monthly column on kayak fishing for Gulf Coast Connections magazine and has authored several fishing articles for Paddler Magazine.

Joel McBride is a passionate and knowledgeable whitewater kayaker and fisherman, having frequently paddled and fished both rivers and freshwater lakes since he was a boy growing up in Maine. Now 39 years old, Joel lives along the banks of the Arkansas River with his wife and two daughters in the small mountain town of Salida, Colorado. He has worked in sales and marketing for the most prominent paddlesports manufacturers for the past 15 years and although his days are busy, he never misses an opportunity to get his feet wet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding coffee table book, September 3, 2007
By Amazon Jams (Warrenton, VA USA) - See all my reviews
If you like beautiful pictures of a couple of guys kayak fishing, then this is the book for you.

I'm not sure what I was looking for now that I think about it...the holy grail of kayak fishing maybe? Whatever the case, there is little information in this book that you cannot find easily on the Internet. In fact, I was saddened by the realization that I could have written this book based on the information that I already knew, and I'm a newbie to the sport!

Most disappointing is the fact that the actual kayak fishing information is so far back in the book that there are precious few pages left to read. Much of the book is dedicated to the basics: kayak equipment, paddling techniques, etc. I would prefer to read much more on fishing techniques for kayakers.

This is truly a beautiful book, and nicely written in an article-by-article style. For the person who wants pertinent kayaking information summarized in one place, buy this book. For those well established in the sport, with safety gear in place and paddling techniques well in hand, there is probably little to learn from this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to its title., May 1, 2008
By Mark C. Myers (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Had this book been entitled "Kayak Fishing: A Beginner's Guide" or "Kayak Fishing: A Pictorial" I would have easily given it 5 stars; however, when a book calls itself "The Ultimate Guide" it had better have more than pretty pictures and basic beginner information.

Pretty much all of the information in this book is easily, almost unconsciously acquired by the neophyte kayak fisherman in the first couple of months in the sport, through talking to salesmen when buying the first kayak, and in the first few trips out in the kayak through common sense and trial and error - actually, much of this information is included in the free pamphlets that come with the gear.

On the side of kayaking technique and safety, many other books and videos have stated the information more thoroughly and more correctly. The author is obviously a fisherman first and a kayaker a distant second. Even on the side of fishing, the information is fairly scant. There is basic information on techniques, again, things that can be learned fairly easily without spending another $15 on a book, but what is really needed is fishing strategies, and Null's scope is too broad, and therefore too shallow to get into this. Null has experience as a saltwater fishing guide on the Texas coast; he would have better served his readers by limiting the scope of his book to fishing from kayaks on the Texas coast.

While the photography in the book was very pretty, I found the writing style to be fairly amatuerish - worthy of a self-published or regionally published book, but below the level one expects of a nationally distributed book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide - Coffee table edition, April 27, 2009
By Daniel Loeb (Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is was a great read full of information on selection, equipment and rigging, not alot of specific fishing information, it is assumed that you already fish and that you are interested in transfering that knowledge to a kayak. The pictures are great and full of detail, It has sat on my Coffee table since I finshed it, Everyone looks and comments on it. A great book well worth the purchase.
