5.0 out of 5 stars Only for the serious Artisan , January 6, 2007
A simply beautiful book which showcases the extreme beauty of the Patination of metals. Japan is truly an inspiration for jewellery artists everywhere. This book is for the serious Jewellery artisan or student, many of the materials used in this book are often difficult to procure and require the ability to have a dedicated area to prepare your patinas. It does give you excellent "recipes", clear instructions and some beautiful photos of completed works as inspiration. Excellent Reference Book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, April 6, 2005
By James Binnion "jbin" (Washington State) - See all my reviews
The fine metalwork of Japan has rarely been equaled. One of the things that make it so unique is the rich color pallet that is achieved by the use of patinas (a chemical process that alter the surface of the metal leaving a colored compound adhered to the metal). This book introduces the process of applying the wide variety of patinas used in Japanese metalworking. The books beautiful design and photographs along with illustrations and clearly written text make it a must have for anyone interested in artistic metalwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare information in English, March 6, 2006
As James mentions, the colors available to the Japanese non-ferrous metalwoker were unique, being the result of specific alloys and patination techniques. Sugimori-san gives a very useful introduction and overview of this complex subject. With the contemporary interest in the Japanese alloys shakudo and shibuichi, special attention should be given by the reader to the niage technique as used on sword furniture and other mixed alloy work. A very useful and beautiful presentation.
