Product Description

This book is the result of five years of research on the Battle of the Atlantic as related specifically to Convoy ON-127 and the sinking of the SS Stone Street, the confiscated Italian merchant ship SS Clara, flying the Panamanian flag.

This was the last voyage for the SS Stone Street, and for 13 men who lost their lives in battle with the U-594 of the Wolfpack Vörwarts after a 3 day running encounter. It was at 48-18 N, 39-43 W, about 800 miles east of Newfoundland on Sunday, September 13, 1942, 10:30 a.m. Among those who perished was my brother, Cadet Midshipman Norbert Amborski, training as an Engine Cadet at the Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, Long Island. Two members of the U.S. Naval Armed Guard also lost their lives. The Master, Captain Harald Andersen was taken prisoner and spent the rest of the war in a POW camp in Milag, Germany. This was also the last voyage for 6 merchant ships that were sunk and the Canadian destroyer scort, Ottawa, which lost 112 men when torpedoed.

This story details the voyage, personal accounts, bravery, drama, history, rescue and survival, human interest, grief, and exciting wartime action.
