About the Author

Fizzell has more than 40 years of hands-on horticultural experience. Fizzell has been featured often on television and radio and in leading trade journals, and has become a celebrated guest speaker at industry seminars and horticultural associations throughout the Midwest. Fizzell was the horticultural advisor for the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service for nearly 35 years. In 1991, he founded James A. Fizzell and Associates, Ltd., which provides services to professional horticulturists, arborists, municipalities, sports turf managers, media, and other plant experts needing specialized help. Fizzell attended Pasadena California City College and California State Polytechnic College and received his B.S. in Floriculture and his M.S. in Horticulture from the University of Illinois.

I've borrowed this book from the library twice now and I need to just buy it! It's a wonderful resource for local growing conditions and how to work with them to produce a bountiful garden. I particularly appreciate the individual vegetable entries - I learned a great deal about not only each vegetable I wanted to grow, but also about some of the available varieties. I used this book to plan out where things would go in my garden, what my planting schedule would be, and what varieties I might consider. This is my first year gardening in Indiana, so this book was indispensable! I only wish it had more information on organic approaches to gardening.
