Product Description

In 1965 when the US intervened in San Domingo military observers noted that the para's of the 82nd Airborne were armed with a completely new gun made of light alloy and plastic.

This was the M 16, a weapon developed by an aeronautical engineer based on the design of Eugene Stoner. It was subsequently used in Vietnam and it was there that it became world renowned. With a number of adaptations more than ten million M 16's have been produced and it is in service in at least 80 countries.

Jean Huon tells the fascinating story of this weapon. Packed with more than 200 full color images and 200 black and white photos, The M 16 is a comprehensive historyof the development of this key weapon. The book shows every conceivable version , variant, and accessory of the weapon. It even includes versions made under license by othe manucturers.

The M 16 will be of enormous interest to collectors and gun enthusiasts and to historians of the Vietnam and Post Vietnam eras.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to the hype, August 24, 2005
By Rodger Young "Tweak" (Tacoma, WA United States) - See all my reviews
May have been better in the original French version but the translation is very difficult to read as the terms used to describe the various parts of the rifle are wholly confusing. Given the the errors in captioning and lack of original content I haven't have had much use for this book except for the truly beautiful photography some of which look to be original, or not previously released, pictures.

I'm not trying to belittle this work since Jean Huon is a well known gun scribe in Europe but there are many better books that cover this subject matter.

I hope to learn at least one thing from each book I read and this one did not let me down, I finally saw how the "grenade launchers" I see sold here and there fit on the muzzle of the M16 between the flash suppressor and the end of the barrel threads. It's an ingenous system.

Jean, if you're reading this, I truly wish you would have used a better translation service and the one you contracted didn't have a clue what you were writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, March 24, 2008
This is the worst gun book I ever bought. I have never been more disappointed, as I was really looking forward to reading this. This guy does not even call the parts of the gun by their correct names. And everything is in metric. As the headline reads, a complete waste of time and money. I did not buy this from Amazon, but honestly, I hated this book so bad I felt everyone should be warned!
