Editorial Reviews

Review
One of the best books on the elastic and plastic behavior of structural elements under complex stress conditions. --M. Grujicic, Clemson University

Professors Chen and Han are to be congratulated for their quite unique contribution... a treasure on the bookshelf of those who seriously commit themselves in the study of structural plasticity --Applied Mechanics Reviews

Product Description
This comprehensive text addresses the elastic and plastic behavior of general structural elements under combined stress. It sets out to examine the stress-strain behaviors of materials under simple test conditions and proceeds to show how these behaviors can be generalized under combined stress. The topic of structural plasticity is presented in a manner that is simple and concise, encompassing the classical theory of metal plasticity as well as concrete plasticity. An unabridged J. Ross Publishing republication of the edition published by Springer-Verlag, New York, 1988, 606pp. Key Features - Outlines the finite element implementation of the generalized stress-strain relations for the solution of practical steel and concrete structural problems - Provides worked examples, end-of-chapter problems, answers to selected problems, and clear illustrations and tables - Includes important constitutive equations for structural materials and applications to steel and concrete structures - Offers examples of the most useful constitutive models and analytical methods

3.0 out of 5 stars Plasticity, June 27, 2001
By Carlos Eduardo Foltran (Campinas, SP Brazil) - See all my reviews
For those who want to study hard the beyond-elastic-limit behavior of the materials, this book is a good choice. After an introduction to tensorial mathematics and Einstein's indicial notation, the plastic models are presented to the reader. On its first part, it is presented a general theory of plasticity for any kind of materials as metals, rocks, soils and concretes. Several examples of practical applications are given. On the second part, the study is concerned on metal plasticity and a numerical finite element approach is presented. The theory presented in this book is very complete and deeply explained, but the language in many parts is bit confuse, which makes the study more difficult. If you are looking for an introductory reading, it could be a good idea to try "Continuum Theory of Plasticity", by Akhtar S. Khan. This other one has a simpler language and more usual mathematical notation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for plasticity, March 17, 2004
By Satish C. Chaparala "satish chaparala" (Binghamton, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of the wonderful books in plasticity. Especially the language in the book is self explanatory. Worked out examples provided in this book gives the reader a clear picture of concepts. As the title suggests, this is mainly focussed on plasticity in structures. If you are interested in plasticity in metal forming, rolling, contact etc, refer to mathematical theory of plasticity by Hill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book at an affordable price!, March 8, 2007
This book provides a comprehensive treatment for the plasticity and inelastic behaviors of structural members under combined stresses. It covers all aspects of plasticity for both steel and reinforced concrete structures. While structural engineers will find this book a useful reference for elastic and plastic analysis and design of framed structures, university professors will find it a good textbook for courses on plasticity and limit analysis. I am delighted to know the book is now available at an affordable price for university adoption.
