Editorial Reviews

Product Description

You know that cats have nine lives, but do you know what happens after?

Where cats go after they die, and what they do there, is the story told in "Mama Cat," a new illustrated book for children.

The main character is Eames, a real-life cat wise beyond his years. He’s talented and precocious. One day he's installing a new mouse on the computer, the next he's re-writing Tennessee Williams to create an all-feline version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

Eames hopes his story will help people understand what happens to cats when they go beyond their nine lives. Although people are always sad when they lose a pet, Mama Cat shows that there is no reason to be sorry for the pet.

"We are very happy living among the human care givers," Eames says. "But this story, known by cats old and wise, tells of a happier place…"

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Tale of Hope Told Simply and Well., January 14, 2004
By Becky Briesacher "Safety Officer" (Worcester, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This slim and sly volume is one you need to buy BEFORE your child discovers the special pain of a deceased and dearly loved animal. Put this in your bookshelf NOW and take it out every couple of months or so-- that way when you need it, it'll already be a "family classic" and familiar, thus more comforting.
The sunny yellow cover, deliciously evocative ink drawings, and subtly supple prose let a child fantazize about the afterlife of his beloved housecat (here a savvy orange tabby named Eames) in the most positive way.
By letting the pet paint a picture of
"A field someplace,
"Past the farthest hill,
"Where kitties and cats play all day
"Where they can always eat their fill,"
I appreciate the vision of a peaceful end coming not from a parent/authority figure
but from the animal itself describing where she is (naturally and easily) going.
(I know this would make ME much more comfortable!)
Children small or children grown, maybe astray, solitary, fit but looking for hope--all would do well to tuck "Mama Cat" in the bookshelf. One day soon you'll reap its comfort.
