Grade 3 Up - An elegantly illustrated rendition of the prayer Jesus taught to his followers. Using the text from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, the artist adorns each page with symbolic, carefully chosen creatures and plants, from butterflies, dogwood blossoms, and exotic birds to camels, a lamb, and a leopard. Each of the rich, luxurious spreads contains one line of graceful script and a softly hued illustration, all edged with decorative borders. The flora and fauna in each exquisite painting have personal or religious significance that is explained in an appended notes section. This inspiring picture book celebrates the beauty and power of nature as well as the comforting words of the Lord's Prayer, and is a more traditional interpretation than Tim Ladwig's more modern version (Eerdmans, 2004). - Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA

Book Description
The short text of the Lord's Prayer (which begins, "Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. . . . ") is beautifully illuminated here by Heidi Holder in the manner of a medieval manuscript. The artwork accompanying each phrase is lushly detailed, with meticulous renderings of animals, birds, and insects; traditional religious symbols; and picturesque scenes of gardens, wildlands, and distant castles. Children will delight in discovering the various interactions between the creatures and the miniature drawings that surround each page.
