Editorial Reviews

Review

The format couldn't be clearer. Each test describes the part, its claims, a brief technical write-up and the actual results. Cappint it all off are real dyno generated graphs, showing exactly what gains, and where were acheved against the baseline. Before you drop your hard-earned money on the metal, shell it out for a book that tells you what's worth the green. -Hemmings Muscle Machines, May 2006 --Hemmings Muscle Machines, May 2006

Product Description

The 4.6- and 5.4-liter modular Ford engines are finally catching up with the legendary 5.0L in terms of aftermarket support and performance parts availability. Having a lot of parts to choose from is great for the enthusiast, but it can also make it harder to figure out what parts and modifications will work best. Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower on the Dyno takes the guesswork out of modification and parts selection by showing you the types of horsepower and torque gains expected by each modification. Author Richard Holdener uses over 340 photos and 185 back-to-back dyno graphs to show you which parts increase horsepower and torque, and which parts don’t deliver on their promises. Unlike sources that only give you peak numbers and gains, Building 4.6/5.4L Ford Horsepower on the Dyno includes complete before-and-after dyno graphs, so you can see where in the RPM range these parts make (or lose) the most horsepower and torque. Holdener covers upgrades for 2-, 3-, and 4-valve modular engines, with chapters on throttle bodies and inlet elbows, intake manifolds, cylinder heads, camshafts, nitrous oxide, supercharging, turbocharging, headers, exhaust systems, and complete engine buildups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Source for Real Dyno Results, June 30, 2006
By Bob OC Jones (St. Paul, Minnesota) - See all my reviews
The basis for this book is showing you before and after comparisons for a particular modification. If you want to know how much horsepower and torque a particular throttle body, supercharger, or set of cams will give you, this is the book for you. The book contains mostly engine dyno numbers, so you have to remember that the numbers will be higher than on a chassis dyno.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Car Owners, Not Truck Owner, April 20, 2008
This was a great book in so many ways, the caveat being it's geared towards muscle cars and not trucks. The 3-V 5.4L engines used in trucks are are barely mentioned and there isn't a single test of them in the book. Unfortunately, that was my focus of research. I learned a great deal about the Ford modular engines in general and even stuff that would apply to the 5.4L truck engine... but, overall, I found the book more of a "dessert" than a "main course." Had I been a car guy, the reverse would have been true. Viewed in context, there is a great deal of worthwhile information in Holdener's book... especially if you need information on the various supercharger and turbocharger kits out there. The book is laid out well and the material is presented in an easy-to-digest format.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall very good book, January 18, 2007
Is a very good book with many helpful tests and graphs to show how the different engine set ups affect the 5.4/4.6 modular engine family. I would def. recomend this book to anyone out there looking to do minor to major engine modification to this ford engine family.
