Editorial Reviews

Review

That Christians share in the very divine life of the Trinity is one of the most exciting and awe inspiring mysteries of the Christian faith. Dr. Daniel Keating has written a concise and readable theological introduction to this marvelous Christian doctrine. Not only does he provide an insightful examination of the New Testament evidence for the doctrine of deification, but he also masterfully explores the historical development and perceptively assesses the doctrinal significance of the notion of deification within the Eastern and Western traditions. Dr. Keating's study is biblically enlightening, historically sensitive, doctrinally engaging, and spiritually enriching. One finishes reading this book rejoicing in the knowledge that one is a Christian. --Thomas G. Weinandy, O.F.M., Cap., Executive Director for the Secretariat for Doctrine at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC

While often misunderstood in or eclipsed by various theological traditions of modern provenance, deification stands at the very center of the Christian faith and constitutes the surpassing goal toward which the Christian life is directed. Daniel Keating has put all of us into his debt for proffering a synthetic treatment of deification that is as accessible as it is astute. Squarely grounded in Scripture, deeply rooted in the Patristic tradition, and laudably engaging the ecumenical discourse, the book is simply the most concise introduction to deification presently available. This is a must reading for all introductory courses in Christian theology in divinity schools and seminaries. Tolle, lege! --Reinhard Hütter, Professor of Christian Theology, Duke University Divinity School

Product Description

The doctrine of deification came under challenge during the Reformation. Likewise, Orthodox Christians have sometimes charged that Roman Catholic teachings on deification lack coherence. In light of these divisions, Daniel Keating eloquently explores biblical and patristic testimony to deification and provides a sure guide into its mysteries. Human beings come to share in the Trinitarian life, without blurring the distinction between Creator and creature. Along the way Keating treats us to choice quotations from Thomas Aquinas, Gregory Palamas, Calvin, Wesley, Newman, von Balthasar, and others who attest to the shared inheritance of this fundamental truth of faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Deification, December 11, 2007

(REAL NAME)
Might be the best introductory text about deification out there. Especially for hte price. A little too Roman Catholic for my tastes but otherwise a great introduction.
