Product Description
Each of the 360 degrees of the Zodiac has its own unique symbol and meaning. These symbols are often applied to the degrees of the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, and ruling planet of the natal horoscope. This book, comprising two complete sets, was first published in 1898 and has long been ranked as among the finest on the subject.

About the Author
Charubel (1826-1908) was the pseudonym of John Thomas, a Welsh clairvoyant, astrologer and healer. As a young man he studied for the ministry, but when forced to choose between religious life and his psychic abilities, he chose the later. He founded (and later dissolved) an occult order. He also published numerous books and was editor of several periodicals. His Degrees of the Zodiac Symbolized was first published in 1893.

Sepharial (1864-1929) was known to friends as Walter Gorn Old. His early days were as a Theosophist. Leaving them, he associated for a time with Alan Leo’s gang and wrote numerous books on astrology. An astrologer, clairvoyant and occultist, towards the end of his life he became a charismatic Christian. He had a lifelong interest in horse racing. His translation of La Volasfera was first published in 1898.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Grimoire, January 26, 2003
By Timothy J. Smith (Burdett, New York USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This little book of degree symbols is remarkable for its accuracy and uneven-ness. Instead of providing a simple, bland, and consistently positive interpretation of each image, this book runs the gamut from the grim and harsh to the exalted and subtle. I have used it in my astrological practice for 40 years, and have often been astonished at the precision of its interpretations. Some people believe that because of its age, the careful practitioner should adjust for the precession of the equinoxes before applying the symbols to the degrees of a modern horoscope. However, I have found that rounding up to the next whole degree works just fine. If you have access to the "Long Form" of the Marc Edmund Jones/Elsie Wheeler degree symbols, they often suggest an antidote for the darker tones of this text; conversely this work reveals those tones where the Jones' Sabian Symbols glosses them over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated sets of degree symbols, August 15, 2005
I bought a very small hardcover book containing the degrees of the zodiac symbolized by Charubel and Sepharial decades ago, back in about 1970. I was very impressed with the symbols, particularly with Sepharial's.

Recently I have been comparing the symbols of Charubel and Sepharial with the Sabian symbols of Elsie Wheeler. It's a very interesting study. I may write a book about it.

The Sabian symbols are the most famous degree symbols, but my introduction to this subject was the book you are thinking of buying right now, the Charubel and Sepharial symbols. Of the three sets, I'd have to say that the Sepharial symbols are the clearest. You don't miss what he's driving at. It isn't too vague, as Charubel sometimes is, and as Wheeler occasionally is. Sepharial puts the meaning of the degree right out there where you can't miss it, and usually has a human protagonist in his symbols to make it even clearer, as opposed to some sort of geometric shape or other.

Sepharial claimed to have gotten his symbols from a publication called La Volasfera, but I understand that nobody has ever seen La Volasfera, and at least one writer suspects that Sepharial made them up himself. What is La Volasfera anyway?

Astrology is such a complicated subject, with so many planets to keep track of, their positions in signs and houses, their aspects to each other, and also their decans and degrees. Complicated as it is, I think the study of individual degrees of the zodiac is worth adding to the list, because the readings are interesting and accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Useful Astrological Symbols, July 8, 2007
This book could be the 'missing link' for those working with astrology. The symbols and their written interpretations can be used with stunning results in both natal and forecasting work. Which set of symbols? I find I have to use both, one dominating at certain times, the other at other times. Warning: make sure you realize that 0 Libra in your printed chart is Libra 1 in these symbolic readings, and so on; 11 Sagittarius in a chart is Sagittarius 12 when you look for the symbol. It is truly amazing that these seers from the 19th century were able to perceive, or create, symbols which are persistently accurate and effective in the 21st. You will explore and find for yourself how to use them, if you get in the spirit of astrological discovery.
