Product Description
New York City, alias the Big Apple, city of promise-and realized potential: where class and crass coincide and soaring skyscrapers are edged with dark alleyways. A city of remarkable feats: the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building. Of noble vision and vast public good: the UN, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library. Art mecca for the nation. Engine of America’s wealth. The country’s most populated metropolis. The nation’s first capital. Epicenter of the Great Depression. Hourly, the streets of New York City vibrate with life: trucks, cabs, stretch limousines, honking horns, street vendors, graffitti, police on horseback, dog walkers, in-line skaters, mime artists, briefcase-toting execs, and the fashionable-dressed to the nines. Newcomers are swept into this swirl of sounds, sights and sensations, struck by the insouciance and unflagging fortitude with which New Yorkers handle their day. Whether shopping Fifth Avenue, sampling soul food in Harlem, gallery-hopping in SoHo, touring Central Park in a carriage or sipping latte in Greenwich, visitors are embraced in the city’s contagious pulsation-and transported to an urban sphere that is unquestionably awesome.

From the Publisher
One Team: A Devotion to Quality There’s just one reason our team is dedicated to producing quality travel publications—you, our reader. We want you to get the maximum benefit from your trip—and from your money. In today’s multiple-choice world of travel, the options are many, perhaps overwhelming. In our guidebooks, we try to minimize the guesswork involved with travel. We scout out the attractions, prioritize them with star ratings, and describe what you’ll discover when you visit them. To help you orient yourself, we provide colorful and detailed, but easy-to-follow maps. Floor plans of some of the major museums help you plan your tour. Throughout the guides, we offer practical information, touring tips and suggestions for finding the best views of the city, a good place for a break or where to make that special purchase. Lodging and dining are always a big part of travel, so we compile a selection of hotels and restaurants that we think convey the feel of the city, and organize them by geographic area and price. We also highlight shopping, recreational and entertainment venues, especially the hot spots. If you’re short on time, two- and four-day itineraries are included so you can hit the highlights and quickly absorb the best of the destination. For those of you who love to experience a destination on foot, we add walking tours, complete with a map. And we list other companies who offer boat, bus or guided walking tours of the city, some with culinary, historical or other themes. In short, we test and retest, check and recheck to make sure that our guidebooks are truly just that: a personalized guide to help you make the most of your visit. After all, we want you to enjoy traveling as much as we do.

5.0 out of 5 stars NYC tour guides study it.. it must be good!, April 7, 2005
I was on one of those tv show/ movie tours in NYC recently and the tour guide had the most interesting stories to tell about the city. After the tour was over, I asked her to please tell me where she got all of her information. She explained to me that the NYC government requires that tour guides pass a test to get a tour guide license. In order to pass that test, they recommend that you study the Michelin NYC Green Guide. I wanted to make sure, so I called the licensing division and asked them what I needed to do to prepare for the exam - sure enough, they said to get the Michelin Green Guide NYC!! This travel guide has to be good!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guide to the cultural attractions of New York, August 20, 1998
By A Customer
This is the best guide available for walking tours of the cultural attractions of the Big Apple. I've used this and earlier versions of this book off and on for 25 years, both when I lived in New York and subsequently. The ratings of New York's major and minor sites from one to three stars are spot on, just as the Michelin Green Guides for London and Paris are. Useful both for the tourist with a few days to spend in New York as well as the resident New Yorker who needs to haul visitors around town to those attractions usually disdained by natives.
