Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The purpose of the Handbook is to provide systematic overview of medical and health informatics for health care professionals and for students in medicine and health care, who will be the clinical professionals of the next millennium. Health care professionals will use computers to support patient care, assess the quality of care, and enhance decision making, management, planning, and medical research. Computer-based patient records and electronic communications will be the most visible developments in the years ahead. The Handbook has been written by a host of renowned international authorities in medical and health informatics. The editors took much care that the Handbook would not be merely a collection of separate chapters, but rather would offer a consistent and structured overview.

5.0 out of 5 stars A first in Intenet compatible books, March 15, 2000
This book not only covers all of the varied and important topics in Medical Informatics, it does so in a unique way using the conventions of the Internet. Key words appear in blue and are underlined. These words not only appear in the index, but the authors maintain a server where these references point to URLs with the latest updated information on the topic cited. Thus the book is an expert source to material far beyond what can be contained within its own pages.

A tour de force!

Thomas L. Lincoln, MD Research Professor of Medical Informatics University of Illinois at Chicago

4.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable Intro to Medical Informatics, December 22, 2000
By A Customer
I have used this book for an intro. course and found it to be a reasonable beginner book. Medical Informatics is a broad topic to say the least, and any book attempting to summarize it will suffer from the task.

This book is slightly dated, but has a helpful web site.

If you want a broad exposure to MI then this is not a bad place to start.
