Editorial Reviews

Review

Provides exactly the type of thoughtful sharing of experiences and research that may one day influence politicians. -- Architectural Review, October 2006

Thirty dense, digestible essays relay the grim reality of conflict in this contested urban space, with an eye towards a positive future. -- Dwell, November 2006

Product Description

The city of Jerusalem has unfortunately become a laboratory of urban conflicts. After terrorist attacks in New York, London, and Madrid, the same can be said not just about the Middle East, but also Western metropolises. City of Collision is a thorough investigation of the current situation in Jerusalem from a trilateral perspective: Israeli, Palestinian, and a host of international experts from multiple disciplines. Architects, urbanists, geographers, anthropologists, and artists discuss the production and use of urban space under the conditions created by "intra-urban conflict." Thirty-five large-format thematic maps and graphics detailing the construction of security fences, urban enclaves, exclaves, and the often jarring juxtapositions created between highly developed and impoverished urban spaces are also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Fear and Architecture Specialists, August 26, 2008
By Emmanuel Torres Reyes "Rowerjock" (San Juan, Puerto Rico USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a must for anyone doing research on the effects of fear and power struggles on urban design and architecture. Jerusalem is for sure a case study that can be applied to any other contemporary city in the world, and this recompilation of essays gives key elements which one can use to work with and do so.
