In this title he explores the variety of religious altars and shrine objects found in Africa and its diaspora. His book is richly illustrated with hundreds of color photos and is written in the same direct style as his previous effort, Flash of the Spirit: African and Afro-American Art and Philosophy (Random, 1987). More narrowly focused and less intellectually accessible to the general public than his earlier work, this catalog is an essential document for any library with an interest in ethnic studies.
