Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Fernando Botero describes himself as "the most Colombian of Colombian painters." His vibrantly colorful pictures of voluptuously plump personalities from every walk of life have been exhibited widely since the 1960s, when they stood in stark contrast to the prevalence of abstract expressionism in New York's art scene. Influenced by the baroque, Latin American folk art, and Italian fresco, as well as the works of artists such as Velázquez, Goya, and Titian, Botero states, "I have no metaphysical messages. I consider myself a painter, nothing more." This pocket-sized booklet of 18 detachable postcards includes a charming array of his humorous and colorful figurative images. --A.C. Smith

From Library Journal
Round upon round upon round, the figures in Botero's paintings stare out of the canvas with small, fixed features, stolid and unblinking: the stuff of fable and fantasy, satire and social comment. This expanded version of a 1986 German exhibition catalog includes recent works as well as six short stories written and illustrated by the artist. Together with an excellent essay by Spies, this material provides a compelling glimpse into the inner workings and imagination of a consummate graphic master and a bold observer of the dynamics of power in his native Latin America. Drawing upon the atmosphere and heritage of his own background, while acknowledging the impact of classical and European traditions, Botero has created a unique world of exaggerated dimensions. Excellent illustrations, many in color, serve to enhance and complement the fine text. Published on the occasion of the artist's 60th birthday, this book is a fitting gift both for him and for the public.
