Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Octopuses, squids, cuttlefishes and their relatives ("cephalopods") are some of the most "alien" creatures on earth. They have complex behaviours and many are experts at spectacular color and shape changes. They come in all shapes and sizes, from pygmy octopuses to giant scams (> 15 m long), and occur from shallow reefs to the deep sea (> 7,500 m deep). This guide includes information and images for species from around the world as well as general stories on their unique lives and bizarre habits. With over 800 photos of cephalopods taken in their natural habitat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have!, October 28, 2001
This book is a must-have for all people interested in cephalopods. It is full of beautiful photographs, as well as information on the basic biology and species descriptions of many cephalopods. As a basic guide, it belongs on a shelf next to Hanlon's Cephalopod Behaviour for comprehensive knowledge of cephalopds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many, Many Squid, December 23, 2003
By J. Rantschler "J." (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The main feature of this book is that it contains glossy photographs of every cephalopod species that has been photographed, usually more than one for each. Each species comes with a short description. Several short essays are included describing mating, chromatophors, and other aspects of cephalopod behavior and anatomy. Although I'm not sure how useful it is as a resource, it is an excellent book for those who find squids and cuttlefish interesting and for artists with an interest in sea life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Photography, January 12, 2007
While this is not a deep look at these, the most fascinating of invertebrates, it is a lively book that is most valued for its illustrations. Some of the photographs here are amazing, and the taxonomic information seems to be, from this amateur's perspective, sound and up to date. This is either a lively reference or an informative coffee table book, dependeing on your point of view, but a great addition to the library of any ceph buff.
