5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, May 20, 2005
By Robert Byrd (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Let's Get Lost (DVD)
This moody, almost sullen look at the life and music of Chet Baker is one of the most striking documentaries I've ever seen. Director Bruce Weber's background in still photography translates well to the cool yet lucid look of this grainy black and white film. I really had little interest in Chet Baker before seeing LET'S GET LOST, but became a huge fan after seeing it. I went out to one of my favorite music stores and purchased literally every title of his work I could find. Baker had a very smooth (but not sentimental) and uniquely luminous west coast sound that no one has since duplicated. This film puts his music and his somewhat tragic life in a historical and artistic context that's both fascinating and heartbreaking. I saw it only once in 1988, when it was released on a very limited basis in art houses around the country. But I never forgot it. Surely some insightful soul out there in the world of DVD distribution realizes the importance of releasing this title? It deserves to be seen and preserved on DVD, the only home entertainment format that will do it justice. One can only hope....

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest documentary no one has seen, January 21, 2005
This film is breathtakingly beautiful, haunting, and even funny. A must see for any artist, no matter which medium you dabble in. I second, thind, fouth, and onward the popular opinion here that this film MUST find DVD distribution. The crispness in the overall texture and the subtle painting of shadows in the lighting of the cinematography would be SO much greater in DVD format. Not to mention, I simply cannot imagine the possible deleted scenes that would be available. However, until such time, buy the VHS, because until those sales rise, we won't have a DVD. And missing this nearly flawless insight into the brilliance and isolation of an artist would be a shame for any film lover.
