4.0 out of 5 stars Credible version of famous scandal, August 26, 2002
By David Mills (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
This "unrated" version might be different from the video I saw over a decade ago. It does show some nudity, but that is not central to the film. "Scandal" does an excellent job in reproducing an era, characters, and attitudes. John Hurt and Joanna Killmer-Whalley are excellent in their roles, Brigit Fonda slightly less so, partly due to her not quite mastering an English accent(both actresses are more physically attractive than Keeler or Rice-Davies appear in photos from that period). While Stephen Ward (Hurt) was prosecuted for procuring, it does seem that all he did was bring together a group of people who were out for a sometimes jaded good time, and had politicians and diplomats not been involved, this affair might never have come to light or, at least, been accorded such attention. When the film is over, one is left with an after-effect not of immorality or scandal, but of how pathetic this whole affair really was.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sleazy, Sordid And, I Guess You Could Say: 'Scandalous', April 22, 2009
I didn't expect much out of this when I was saw it about 15 years ago on VHS, but it turned to be quite interesting. The only problem was, when I watched it a second time, was it has too much a sleazy feel to it and an obvious political agenda.

There is a lot of nudity in here, lots of it mainly with Bridget Fonda who plays "Mandy Rice-Davies" and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer as "Christine Keeler." Whalley-Kilmer looked particularly beautiful.

John Hurt as "Stephen Ward" and Ian McKellen's "John Profumo" are the male stars. The story is about Britain's "Profumo Affar," as it was labeled back then - a sex scandal involving English politicians in the early 1960s.

In what could be a dry account turns out to be a fascinating movie, well-acted and beautifully-photographed. It is sordid, though, and that will offend a number of people.
