2.0 out of 5 stars Not Murder Rock, October 22, 2007
By D. Travers Scott (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
Murder Rock
Note the reviews here are misleading. Slashdance is NOT the same movie as Fulci's Murder Rock.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough slashing, way too much dancing, August 6, 2003

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The title and box cover of this film led me to expect some kind of bloody version of Flashdance, and while dancing does not appeal to me at all, the prospect of a few murders led me to go ahead and take a chance on Slashdance. What I found was a low-budget film that continually shot itself in the foot. There are a few murders, but these are less than impressive. A person with a freshly slit throat is going to bleed a lot; I think that is common knowledge. It's fine not to take the gory approach, using the film's preciously low funds for something besides large Karo syrup purchases, but for goodness' sake don't run a saw over a person's neck and then give me a close-up featuring nothing more gruesome than a jagged red line on the victim's throat.

The main character of the film is a tough yet feminine young police officer named Tori (Cindy Maranne), fighting for respect in a department where her supervisor continually hits on her (albeit nicely) and the chauvinistic police captain cares only about using his job as a springboard to bigger and better things in government. He wants Tori kept out of the way, equating her irregular yet successful busts of the past with potential scandal for himself. Several young actresses and dancers have disappeared in recent weeks, and the captain thinks these cases are of no importance whatsoever, so he gives Tori the case. Tori soon goes undercover as a dancer, and this is where the film takes a nasty turn. Time and again we are forced to watch a group of seemingly bad dancers going through their routines; it is utterly horrible and almost beyond endurance. The only small breaks we get come in the form of the disgusting mentally challenged character doing such unpleasant things as eating live goldfish. Eventually, the murderer is revealed (and it's by no means a surprise), and one is left wondering who out there actually finances movies like this. For her part, Cindy Maranne is not a bad actress, but some of the characters are just embarrassingly stereotypical; it's as if the script writer got his hands on a list of what not to do in a movie and decided to do every single thing on the list. This includes introducing several seemingly relevant plot elements early on and never following up on them at all. Slashdance won't make your eyes bleed, but it's really not worth watching.
