Corbijn Goes To Color; Release On DVD PLEASE?!!!!!!!!, July 21, 2001
After working with Depeche Mode in Black & White ("Strange"), Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn turned to Color for the Mode's next set of music videos from their then newest album, Violator. The result is a wonderful collage of music and visuals that never let you down. Is it any wonder Violator is considered by many (including myself) to be DMs best album?Personal Jesus-actually this is my least favorite music video out of the 6 presented here. I love this song to death, but the Brit humor really seems wrong to me. This song evokes such a powerful message, but instead of Dave singing to disenchanted youths on the telephone we get the whole band, dressed in cowboy attire, making their way over to a bordello for some fun and relaxation. I never truly question depeche mode, but I do feel that a great song such as Personal Jesus deserves a more serious toned music video. Policy Of Truth-Beautifully done music video, with DM getting dumped by their girlfriends and learning to cope with it. This video really kept the essence of the song intact. Enjoy The Silence-My favorite song and my favorite DM music video. It doesn't get much better than this. Anton hit the nail right on the head with the idea of having Dave dress up as a king and walk all over the world to find a suitable spot to sit down on a cot and, simply put, enjoy the silence. Plus the other shots of the band wearing leather jackets is very nice. This video also gives us a rather unique musical intro that is not found on the normal version of Enjoy The Silence or any other remixed version. Clean-A previous reviewer stated how much they disliked this video because of the lack of tone the video gives to such a serious and important song. This is the exact way I feel about the Personal Jesus video. But I have a soft spot for Clean. Watching Martin's girlfriend finishing her swim, then coming in to sit with him on the sofa for an evening of pleasure and romance can't be all that bad. Basically they're shot from behind the sofa, so the main focus is to view what is on the wall which is various things, such as pictures of the band and such. Perhaps not serious enough, but still better than the Personal Jesus video. Halo-Great Video with a Great little Story too! I personally think that if you like Martin over Dave, then this video is for you. The story is this: a circus has come to town and Martin & his girlfriend play sort of miming clowns, while Dave plays the "Strongest Man In The Universe". But then Dave makes a play for Martin's girl and is turned down flat as she goes to sleep in Martin's arms, while Dave lies awake, brooding. A Special Note: Look for Jenna Elfman (TVs Dharma & Greg) as one of the dancers in this video(she's the tall one). World In My Eyes-standard music video set to a live performance of the song. Everytime I see this video I think of how much I'd love to have a good quality copy of a World Violation Tour Concert on Compact Disc. Sadly, there are none available to the public. Even the bootlegs for that era are pretty crappy. I guess after giving us "101", DM didn't feel the need to release more complete concerts on CD. Maybe one day they will. Please release this and all other depeche mode films on DVD. There are plenty of fans out here who would love to get their hands on them! Stay Devoted and Enjoy The Silence!
