Surprisingly Good!, July 23, 2001
Wow, for a BBC mini series made in 1981, I have to say this was pretty good! Sure, the special effects were extremely hokey and pathetic, but hey, when you have characters named Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz, and Slartibartfast, the cheesier the FX, the better! The translation from the book(s) to the screen was very well done, keeping with Douglas Adams' orginial intent. Much of what was shown in the film was very close to the book, and the acting was convincing. Even though it is about 3 hours long, it captures only about 2 and a half of the 6 books. We find out what the question to the ultimate answer is, and we're left to imagine the rest. There were many things I wish they would have shown in the series, but time is quite constraining. For what they had to work with, they did a decent job. I highly recommmend this if you can get your hands on it.

A comic space adventure, resembling a Star Wars parody, November 19, 2006
This movie is fun to watch. It puts you in a humorous and easy-going mood. The special effects are quite good and they are very akin to the effects from Star Wars episode 4-6. You get similar scenery: deserts, snow, forests, and of course - space. The Star Wars characters have their equivalents here, including for a robot who is something like R2D2 and 3PO combined. There are some creatures called "vogons", who closely resemble Jabba the hut. There is a beautiful girl - Trisha, who is like princess Leia.
I take some stars off because it is slightly silly. But if it wasn't silly then perhaps it wouldn't be so funny. First, the earth gets destroyed, because a galactic highway must go through it. So, the group of people hitchhike a vogon's space ship. They travel in space and have various adventures. Meanwhile a guy, who resembles Obi Wan Kenobi creates a planet which is a very good copy of the earth, so they can go back to our home planet. Despite the fact that the movie asks the quesions "who am I, what is the meaning of life and the universe" the answer to these questions is very surprising: 42.
So, the plot is not serious and it is rather shallow. Nevertheless, it is fun and exilerating to watch. Recommended to all fans of sci-fi and comedy.
