Editorial Reviews

This biographical treatment of Albert Einstein accurately portrays him not as a detached physicist, but rather as a man deeply concerned with social and political ideas. Newsreel footage shows him soon after he relocated to the United States after fleeing the Nazis in his native Germany. He became active in social causes (and is even seen at some lighthearted social events), and those who knew him reminisce about his development as a social thinker. The film notes how Einstein's fear of Hitler's harnessing the potential destructive power of the atom altered his pacifism to some degree and led him to urge President Roosevelt to start what would become the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. The depth of Einstein's mind as it stretched into areas outside the realms of math and science is covered well, and this film, which is eloquently narrated by actor William Hurt, provides an insightful look into one of the most fascinating characters in history. --Robert J. McNamara

4.0 out of 5 stars History of an Activist, December 28, 1999
By R. A. Price (Genesee, CO United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Einstein's science is not addressed from a technical standpoint in this video,as should be evident from the title. The title is a play on the title of Einstein's book, "The World As I See It" which is NOT a science book but rather philosophical writings. I enjoyed this portrayal of Einstein's evolution as an activist. There are many wonderful old film clips included. I think this video is a must for any person interesting in knowing Einstein the person.

1.0 out of 5 stars It should be named "How others Saw Einstein", June 30, 1999
By A Customer
I was disappointed with the fact that the title says "How I See the World". This video is full of other people's interview telling about some events of Einsteins life and how they saw Einstein in a political clouds around him. While buying, I was following the listing of Videos under the section Science & Tech / Documentry of Amazon.Com. This turns out to be a video of rumors and gossips and historians work on only parts of his life story. I felt sorry for Einstein because this video portrayed a rather "vulnerable" character, instead of a guy who's word was unchalangeble (till date), and his work a series of masterpiece. It tells more of his life around the WW2 days and political garbage around his life. Instead of telling about work and events of his inspirational career in physics, and his life as a Physicist. His carer is an inspiration for many people (even outside physics). But unfortunately the authors of this video found the rumors and gossips of his political mishaps to be rather presentable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, November 4, 2005
What a unique man. Einstein really tried to put it all together, in one grand unifying theory. Can one believe in science and GOD at the same time? Einstein thought so. William Hurt does a great job at narating this video. His voice seems perfect for some reason. The film does a good job of capturing how almost desperate Albert was to learn and teach as much as possible before he died. He was truly in love with the miracle that is life. I also found it interesting how he was influenced by Ghandi, and his ideas on passive resistance. Check out Einstein's "Essays on Humanism." I highly recommend it.
