This concise documentary, from the Famous Authors series, offers a look at the life of the woman considered the greatest of female novelists, Jane Austen. Although only 30-minutes long, this is a nice, quick overview and features the only existing renderings of Austen and her family, as well as modern footage of the location of her family home. The narration is informative, without being intrusive. It runs through Austen's all-too-short years as the daughter of a country parson, her closeness to her sister Cassandra, and her sedate life that never included high society, despite her innate ability to sharply depict the mores and fallacies of the Regency period. --N.F.
