Music videos don't get any more fun than this, July 24, 2001
Aside from the fact that Shania Twain is drop dead gorgeous, the music on this set is just plain fun. It's not traditional country, though. Don't get me wrong, I love traditional country - I was first drawn to music at 9 years old by Johnny Cash circa 1965. And I'm a rocker at heart, and I was getting increasingly fed up with the overly processed, overly rhythmic barrage of noise that was becoming pop music in the late 90's. But Shania Twain brought the best of pop back into vogue - understandable lyrics with catchy themes and clever hooks, enjoyable melodies and toe-tapping rhythms, and refreshingly fun harmonies, wrapped up in a top-notch production - with country influences. But as you watch these videos, it's just amazing to realize that God made someone so talented musically who is also so absolutely gorgeous. Sheesh. And fun! The playfulness she exhibits on many of these pieces just makes her even more attractive. Once I saw these videos, I never listened to these songs the same way again on the radio. "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" is a typical country-style pop tune. But the dress that Shania is wearing is not a typical Grand Ole Opry outfit - more like New York City evening wear. (Not that this is a good thing necessarily, just an observation.) "Any Man of Mine" is a rousing pop tune with great line dancing potential. Shania's dressed more like a ranch hand in this video, assuming, of course, that a petit midriff-baring form-fitted young Raquel Welch is your typical ranch hand. "The Woman In Me" is a slow and dramatic love song. The video is set against an Egyptian background, complete with pyramids, but they are subtle - I watched the video three times before I even noticed it was in Egpyt. I knew there were horses or camels or something, but whatever ... Shania is here! Who cares about the rest of it ... but it's a strong love song. "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here" is easily the best song on the set - completely addictive, fun music that will make the dead dance. The video displays a great sense of lightheartedness and humor that doesn't come across in the audio. I found myself rewinding it over and over. "You Win My Love" is just a plain solid upbeat pop song - nothing revolutionary, just excellent pop music. She's more fashionably chic here, in a leather black-and-white checkered racing flag theme, dressed for a day of heartbreaking at Indy. "No One Needs To Know" wins for cutest piece in the set, with catchy twists lyrically that country music is known for, and a very playful video theme of a house with an upcoming storm - Shania turns that into a fun and whimsical event. The set turns more serious with "Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore)", a sorrowful look at a broken relationship. And it ends with "God Bless The Child", a frank look at the plight of neglected and abused children in society, with a spiritual anthemic sense of hope. The images are more of Shania and the choir that performs with her, but the words are stark nonetheless. It's a surprisingly mature and compassionate end that rounds out Shania's music rather completely. If you're a gothic death-metal fan, this video isn't for you. But if you enjoy real music, with real themes about real life, you'll love it.

For me, it was love at first Whoooo!, February 23, 2004
Fate can be pretty darned capricious, but sometimes this most mysterious of entities favors one with unexpected riches. An odd and singular set of circumstances had me tuning into country music television one night several years ago; I wasn't really paying attention to the television, but at one point I heard a Whoooo! that was quickly followed by an incredible voice that captivated me. Then I turned my head toward the television, and there was one of the most gorgeous women I had ever seen in my life singing this great song to me. And this vision of loveliness was even dressed in bluejeans out in a country setting. My male Southern heart skipped completely past pitter-patter and moved immediately to Thump-Thump. On that night, watching the video for Any Man of Mine, I became a devoted Shania Twain fan. I had to see and hear more from this new superstar, and The Complete Woman in Me Video Collection helped me do just that.It is pretty incredible to have videos for eight songs from a single album, but Shania Twain is a pretty incredible performer. This collection may only span some thirty-six minutes, but it's all Shania all the time. You start out with Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? It's a fun little video for a fun little song, and Shania is absolutely smokin' in that red dress. I cannot imagine how all the men featured in the video were able to pretend Shania wasn't there prancing around and hugging on them during the whole thing. From there, it's right to Any Man of Mine; as I've said, this is the song and video that made me a Shania fan, and let me just say for the record that I do indeed like it that way. The Woman in Me is a little different, taking Shania away from a country setting, wrapping her in finery, and placing her against a backdrop of deserts and pyramids. This dreamlike vision is quickly cast aside as Shania walks her way into the video for (If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here. I love this video, as Shania is obviously enjoying every minute of filming while looking absolutely stunning, and it's just such a fun song in the first place. I don't want to beat the whole beauty thing into the ground because Shania is a tremendous singer and musician, but I have to mention the fact that tight leather pants play a significant role in the video for You Win My Love - that's all I'm going to say about it. The Woman in Me is a country album, a fact which is made most forcefully with the video for No One Needs To Know; this one's all about Shania and her guitar. After six great videos, can there possibly be more? Yes. Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore) is a representation of real life - in particular, the disintegration of a marriage. Freed of all the famous Shania glamour, Shania still shines. Continuing in the same vein, the collection closes with a subdued, gospel-like, and previously unreleased version of God Bless the Child. You know the songs, you know Shania, so there's really no trick to this one. These are the songs and the videos that made Shania the biggest female country performer of all time. It just doesn't get much better than this.
