Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This exploration into the question of the afterlife begins with a discussion of near-death experiences against a hospital backdrop before it dives into the subjects of hell and Satan with equally gruesome paintings of both. Part of the A&E Bible mysteries series, this 45-minute tape examines Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant ideas of hell as well as those of Dante--complete with his diagram of the seven circles. A priest and a minister debate the origin and purpose of the concept of purgatory; Irish, Chinese, and Americans share their views on the afterlife; Jean Simmons reads excerpts from the old and new testaments and The Divine Comedy; and narrator Richard Kiley presides over the proceedings. Kiley traces the sparse mentions of hell in the Hebrew Bible, the fallen angel references in the Apocryphal Book of Enoch and frequent references in the New Testament, particularly the Book of Revelation. He concludes that, while there is no scientific evidence of an afterlife, people want to believe that a good life will be rewarded and an evil one punished. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Product Description

From the beginning of recorded history, people all over the world have believed in an afterlife. In the West, the powerful images of Heaven, with its white light, halos and harps, and Hell, marked by torture and pits of fire and brimstone, have shaped thought and culture for thousands of years. But where do these images come from? What does the Bible itself tell us about eternal punishment and eternal happiness? And what do these dramatic symbols tell us about our own hopes and fears, our views of sin and redemption? Search for answers to eternal questions and plumb the mysteries of Heaven and Hell with the world's leading historians, archaeologists and philosophers.

3.0 out of 5 stars What happens after we die?, March 4, 2003
If you think worrying about tomorrow is important, consider this. What will happen to you soul if you died tomorrow? When I put those two items in the same pot, all I can brew up is that one ingredient is more essential than the other and yet they relate directly. Because, technically if tomorrow you decided that you want to go to heaven, then you are on that path. And, if tomorrow you decide you want to go straight to hell, not passing Go, then I guess that is the path you are on. This is of course if you believe in a heaven and a hell. But then again, we can't see either, so must go on faith.

To me it makes sense. Not only because life can be heaven or hell, but because there has to be some punishment or reward for how we live our lives. It is logical. Like a mirror of this life, but a mirror into which you can gaze into the endlessness of eternity.

This video presents two paths and focuses more on "hell" and "death" and "punishment" than "heaven" and "eternal bliss" and "being near God."

Where will your soul spend eternity? Does it matter how you live on this earth? Will your soul pay for sins you experience in your body? Is there someone who can pay for those sins for you? Can a belief in Jesus Christ be your ticket out of this world alive? Does the body die and the soul live on?

Will a deviation from moral beliefs send your soul spiraling into an eternity of torment as imagined by Dante?

The Hebrew view is quite different and their view of a heaven and hell might be more in line with being near or far away from the creator after death.

Are you in charge of where your soul will reside or do you believe everyone finds a place of happiness and peace?

What was fascinating is the "life after death" experience. While many see a light at the end of the tunnel, apparently many also come back after witnessing "hellish" type experiences. That should make us all think twice.

I like the explanation of hell being "distance" from God and heaven being "closeness" to God because really I think being far from God, even on this earth can be a torment of sorts. Therefore, this makes sense. However, it does not explain what each situation will entail. They didn't really go into detail about the aspects spoken of in the Bible about heaven having "streets of gold" and hell being "lakes of fire."

Rather unbalanced for "heaven" and "hell." Probably will make you really consider your soul's destiny, but this particular special does not focus on the love of God. It focuses mostly on punishment and suffering induced by our own choices about the next life.

Look for ISBN 1402532547 to listen to a book about Jesus's life and to understand his message of hope and faith. It does seem there is a way out of this world alive. If a soul never dies, this becomes very important.

3.0 out of 5 stars Views on the afterlife, February 24, 2005
By J. S. Kaminski "j_s_k" (Aberdeen, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This program attempts to sum up beliefs about the afterlife from both a Jewish and a Christian perspective.

The Hebrew bible, surprisingly, has little to say. For the most part, the early Jewish writers were concerned about trying to establish God's kingdom here on earth. It was not until the end of the Hebrew bible, in the book of Daniel, that heaven and hell are addressed in detail.

The Christian bible has a much more developed idea of heaven and hell, stressing rewards in the afterwards for a life well lived. And, alternatively, a miserable future for those who stray. The program also covers Dante Alighieri's version of hell, and a quick review of the Catholic concept of purgatory. Overall this was a decent program. Some of the medieval artwork depicting hell and its torments were particularly gruesome!
