At the time it was built, the Titanic was the largest moving object ever constructed. Four city blocks long and 11 stories high, it held up to 3,000 passengers. The popular press deemed the Titanic the "unsinkable ship," but less than five days into her maiden voyage to New York City, she sank, taking 1,522 passengers along with her. Discovery Channel's documentary of this mighty ship spotlights a team of scientists who made a series of site expeditions. Myth and mystery have long surrounded the sinking of the ship, and until recently, scientists did not have the technology to assess the specific damage to the ocean liner's hull. Granted special access to the wreckage by RMS Titanic, the organization that holds the exclusive salvage rights, Discovery films the research and recovery crew as they use advanced underwater imaging technology to debunk previous theories of how the ship sank. Using computer-generated reenactments and vivid photography, Discovery pieces together the final hours of the ship's descent. --Tim Goodwin

5.0 out of 5 stars the perfect date movie, September 1, 1999
By A Customer
If you want to see the perfect special effects, and if your behind doesn't get tired for sitting through nearly 3+ hours, then this movie is perfect. To review this movie must be silly--for everyone on the planet must have seen it at least once somewhere. In truth, this movie is much like its older brothers (there have been at least 3 movies about Titanic made--including "A Night To Remember.") The movie is long, but flows nicely. I even enjoyed the relationship between the main characters--and I thought, prior to seeing this movie, it would be the weekest part. This movie gets closer to the facts than any other movie about Titanic; coupled with the special effects and acting, the movie takes you on an epic adventure--even though everyone knows the ending. Watch this movie for its effects and its script. It's nearly a perfect film--even with some of its minor flaws. The ending is also a cause of some conflict. Some people think Rose was only sleeping in the end. Others speculated she died and her soul went to heaven to reunite with the lost souls. I believe she died and her spirit (what made her a special human being/her thoughts/the essence of who she was) drifted off to the past. Her fondest memories went back to Titanic just as she died. That's another reason I love this movie. It'll let you draw your own conclusions.
