Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Four foul-mouthed tykes in parkas and wool caps navigate the treacherous snows of adolescence such as puppy love, sibling jealousy, and alien abduction in the cartoon that celebrates the American art of bad taste with crude, cut-out animation and construction-paper color. The pilot episode, "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe," establishes the tone and style of all episodes to come: gentle homilies and childhood innocence arising from a twisted plot with grotesque and bizarre twists, in this case involving UFOs, flaming flatulence, and a 20-foot antenna array that springs out of Cartman's butt. In "Volcano" the boys learn the masculine art of hunting endangered species and meet the mythic wilderness monster Scuzzlebutt while oozing lava threatens their town. In "Weight Gain 4000," "big boned" Cartman decides he must slam dietary supplements to beef up for a TV appearance with Kathy Lee Gifford, while Mr. Garrison (egged on by insidious hand puppet Mr. Hat) plots his revenge. Finally, Stan learns tolerance in "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride" while his elementary school struggles to beat the 72-point spread in the big homecoming game--a major event in a town where many citizens never got past the fifth grade. Sweater-garbed creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone introduce each episode in bizarre fireside chats in which they proclaim every episode their "very favorite" as they exchange longing, moon-eyed glances and their dog Old Scratch changes size and breed from shot to shot. --Sean Axmaker

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm super! Thanks for asking!, July 4, 2000

"South Park" is not for the faint of heart or for kids... but great hilarious entertainment for adults. There is at least one overly offensive scene in each episode, but it is always redeemed by side-splitting laughter in another scene.

My only complaint (althought it is a BIG complaint) is that the introductions to each episode by Matt and Trey can not be easily skipped. Having to hold down the fast-forward button on the remote for 5 minutes to get past these little skits is a royal pain and the antithesis of why people get DVD versions in the first place. You should be able to skip to the next selection right to the episode instead of suffering through these skits more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Volume So Far..., August 19, 1999
By glenn_lester@yahoo.com (New Mexico, USA) - See all my reviews
Five words: Cartman Gets an Anal Probe. 'Nuff said.

But....I have to comment on the sound. I too was disturbed when I first heard this DVD. But then after watching it (and volumes 2 and 3) several times, I happened to catch a few reruns on TV(DSS). Lo and behold, I noticed the clicks and pops are in the regular TV episodes IN THE EXACT SAME PLACES!! The high quality of the DVD's just makes them much more obvious. So, based entirely on content, I give this DVD 5 stars!

3.0 out of 5 stars Could've been better, EASILY, January 24, 2001
For the price of this disc- especially at some places- four episodes of South Park ain't bad. These are four pretty funny episodes. Now I could've given this 5 stars, but why didn't I? First of all, the video kinda sucks. I don't know what these other people are talking about but the audio sounded fine; typical South Park fare. But the video just seemed grainy to me. For graphics so simple, was it really that hard to get a good video quality out of this? But the video quality doesn't really bother me after staring at the screen for a minute or two. What REALLY bothers me is the fact that you're forced to sit through what seems like endless blathering of Matt and Trey (the creators) before each episode. It's a little interesting the first time, but it quickly becomes extremely stupid and pointless, and having to sit through it EVERY time you want to view an episode without being able to skip it is just inexcusable. And what does this disc have in the way of extras? A string of Comedy Central show ads. Like I really want to sit through 15 minutes of Make Me Laugh and Win Ben Stein's Money ads. Just skip it, especially considering half those shows have been dead for a while.

These are four good episodes and I definately recommend this DVD (and the five others) to anyone who has a DVD player and is a South Park fan, but the quality of this disc easily could have been much higher, thus it does not deserve a high rating.
