Unless you've been living in a cave, one problem you've heard a lot about is Y2K, the question of what will happen at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2000, if computers fail to recognize the new millennium. Leonard Nimoy hosts Y2K Family Survival Guide, a 48-minute program that, depending on your particular point of view, either provides a solid grounding in how to prepare for mass-computer failure or hypes the panic and incites fear about something that may not transpire. This slickly produced video includes interviews with government and computer-industry figures to gain an understanding of how the problem originated and what is being done to rectify the situation. Yet, even with the efforts being made today, a 2 to 5 percent failure of compliance could cause a chain reaction that could knock out water and electricity and have an extreme consequence on the financial world. How will you and your family deal with such an event? This video gives concrete suggestions (how much food and water to stock, how to deal with hygiene issues, how to use a toilet) on how your family can prepare. The music and narration can be overdramatic, but if you're concerned about how Y2K could affect you, this video will give you a basic understanding of the issue and a starting plan on how to prepare. --Jenny Brown

I tend to procrastinate quite a bit, and just got around to watching this. It gives a sobering perspective of what happened just two short years ago. Now that society has essentially broken down, the advice in this video is a must have. I deducted two stars because Nimoy didn't wear Spock ears. I would have taken it much more seriously, as Spock never engaged in hyperbole. Also, without the Spock ears, Nimoy was unable to calculate probabilities with any substantive accuracy. Had Nimoy engaged in such shoddy work aboard the Enterprise, Kirk would have been dead early in the series, and there would have been no one available to gallavant through space kissing alien women while speaking in halting dramatic speech.

This is a superb video! As a computer professional, I found the statement of the problem to be clear and accurate. As a mom, I was very impressed with the practical preparations discussed and recommended. Get a copy for all your "Good" friends!

Being a great pessimist, I must say that I feel much better after watching this film. There are things I can easily do to prepare myself and my family for the year 2000. Wish there would have been more detailed information and less visual effects, but overall the film "worked".
