Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Whoopi Goldberg returns in a gratuitous, poorly written sequel that contrives a reason to get her character back into Maggie Smith's convent. The "socially conscious" plot finds Goldberg being asked to relate to a bunch of street kids and pull them together into a choir. Since a bad guy is needed, the script grabs that old chestnut about a rich guy (James Coburn) preparing to close down the convent's school, and runs with it. The film is slow and unconvincing from start to finish, although costars Mary Wickes and Kathy Najimy get some good laughs, and the music is pretty spirited. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars What it's REALLY about is..., December 7, 2002
By "flutistsrule" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sister Act 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a great film, and people who know how to connect with real folks understand that. For people who aren't raising teens or who just don't connect with kids, this movie may at first glance be trite and uninteresting. Take another look, because kids really CAN do this--it isn't just a cool idea for a film. What tugs the heart is watching it happen (plus the music is terrific). A variation on "To Sir With Love" or "Mr. Holland's Opus" or "Finding Forrester" or "October Sky"? Sure, I guess. But WHY do producers and directors keep creating these great films, and WHY do we keep loving them? In a time when the government wants us to hold schools and teachers "accountable" for the demise of our youngsters and our society, these stories show us what MANY real teachers--and students--are doing, and it gives us hope. Watch this movie and let these kids be real to you. Just knowing where your kids are and what they are doing isn't enough. Somebody (you?) will have to be there for them. THEN something good can happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, November 6, 2003
By A Customer
I've read all of the reviews on SA2 and it is quite obvious this movie is not for everyone, however, if you enjoy "feel good " movies , this is for you. The storyline iis quite predictable, the acting is good , but the music is a delightful bonus, just wish there was more of it. I know that if I'm feeling a little down, I can pop in this movie and feel better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FEEL GOOD MOVIE !!!, May 12, 2005
By Sonia Sison (Daly City, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've seen this movie and am glad to have a copy. Sister Act 2: BAck in the Habit can't and it will never be compared to the original one but the sequel has a distinct uniqueness and individual artistry to follow up for. Sister Mary Clarence, a music teacher is back again to teach young and talented kids at St. Francis School in San Francisco. The sisters need her help and they're running out of ideas on how to stop the school from closing down. Finally, with a lot of PATIENCE, help and lots of encouragements the students proved to everybody by joining the competition that they're not just bunch of kids but they can do GOOD things through MUSIC and TEAMWORK. My favorite part of the movie when they started performing "Joyful,Joyful" with Lauryn Hill doing the intro I was blewn away.
