Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover
Ranger High School needs a men's basketball coach-but a woman? That's right, and what a woman! Randy Rawlings (Cathy Lee Crosby), former Olympic medalist, is tall, blonde, and beautiful. Her team, though, is a bunch of lanky kids who don't have a clue how to win. That could be a problem. You see, Randy's job hinges on delivering a perfect season. Feisty, old Fenton Granger (Keenan Wynn) would like nothing better. He thinks women should stay home and have babies, not order men around. And it's only a matter of time until Fenton cooks up some devious plan. Randy, though, may help him without knowing it. Her star point guard, Jack, is coming on to her, and she's got no intention of stopping him. If anyone finds out, or Jack gets jealous, it could be bye-bye, blondie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cathy Lee Crosby Was Fantastic, March 10, 2007
Despite what other people are saying about this film I though it was great. This Picture hit the movie screens on March 17 1978. Starring the lovely and gorgeous Cathy Lee Crosby as Randy Rawlings, Michael Biehn as Jack Ripley and Keenan Wynn as Fenton Granger. The picture opens with Randy running down a track while on her way to the gold metal in the Olympics. Then when the race is over Randy is standing at the highest point while they play the Star Spangle Banner. Now we go forward in time where Randy is working with women in aerobic class. Then at the Ranger High School Gym as his basketball team is losing again Fenton Granger the principal of the school tells his current basketball coach that he's finished. While at a local school board meeting, the board is looking over the candidates for the head coach position. Granger tells the board that the leading candidate is Randy Rawlings. Granger is told by his assistant that he wasn't able to get Rawlings on the phone so he sent a telegram which is also a binding contract. When Randy walks into the school boards office with her telegram Granger tells her that there's been a mistake. The Feisty old man doesn't want anything to do with a woman coaching his men's basketball team. However, Randy informs Granger that if he backs out she will take him and the school board to court while using all the members as witnesses. Therefore, with Grangers mine still in the 19th century where women should be at home barefoot and pregnant he tries anything and everything to make sure she quiets. However Randy may have unexpected inside help without even knowing it. Her star point guard Jack Ripley is coming on to her and she does not intend to stop him. However if anyone finds out, or if Jack gets jealous it could be bye bye Randy. Randy throws a wrench into the whole plot when she invites Pro Basketball Star Sydney Wiggs to practice with the boys to help them with the typical fundaments of basketball. Several thoughts on this movie. I thought the role that Keenan Wynn played of being the old grumpy principal with the attitude of women being home was bad. What's sad is that in today's society there are actually men who still feel the same way. The lovely, beautiful and gorgeous Cathy lee Crosby was excellent in her role as Randy Rawlings. I love the beach scene when all she had on was a white tee shirt and red shorts. I also thought the shower scene in the gym was great especially when the janitor came in to clean the showers. They both had to act fast if they didn't want to get caught. Over all I give this movie 10 weasel stars on Cathy Lee Crosby performance alone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tame romance with a cliched "big game" battle of the sexes., December 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Coach (1978) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
... There's a bit more to "Coach" than a high school accidentally hiring a woman coach for their basketball team. She goes on to have an older woman/teen boy romance. Nothing too steamy, but you see some slight skin from actress Cathy Lee Crosby, who a year later went on to fame as co-host for TV's "That's Incredible."

Oh yeah, there's a "big game" coming up. If the team loses, it'll "prove" that the small town fuddy duddies and sexists and are right, and that women are no good at coaching. So it becomes a sort of "battle of the sexes" with the opposing team having a male coach. The home team (led by the teen lover) rallies behind their gal coach -- they're not just playing to win, they're playing to prove that she's a great coach despite her sex.

Can you feel the suspense as that "big game" is being played out on the court ... don't you wonder who'll win? -- NOT!

"Coach" is part of a mini-cycle of older women/teen boy films that were released in the 1970s, early 1980s. The cycle was started by "Summer of '42" and included "My Tutor," "Playing With Fire," and a few others.

Nothing radical there. While older woman/younger men films are rare, "older" twentysomething women/teen boy films are a common male fantasy.
