Sustainable Human Settlements: 60 case studies
Miguel Ruano

192 pp
30 x 23 cm
Paperback
english/español
ISBN: 978-84-252-1723-4

This book is conceived as a basic desk-side reference manual for anyone involved in the field of urban design and planning. It presents, in an accessible form, the current state of the art in sustainable development master-planning, setting out, mostly in a graphic format and by means of 60 carefully illustrated case-studies, what is considered best-practice in the field.

The projects are drawn from all corners of the world, illustrating a global concern for these matters that transcends political and cultural frontiers. The resulting international list of masterplanners whose work is presented in the book includes small highly-specialised local practices as well as various internationally-known firms such as Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, SITE and Daniel Libeskind.

Miguel Ruano is an architect who provides design and consultancy services to large-scale projects. His particular area of expertise concerns sustainability issues, as well as the impact of converging technologies in computing, telecommunications and media on human habitats.

Excerpts of:
Ecourbanismo - Miguel Ruano

Ecology and technology have only recently begun to settle their long-standing difference and to trascend their entrenched and confrontational ideological positions. Strategies for sustainable development now integrates both realms in a new and bold vision of the future. "Sustainability", the term made famous by the Rio `92 Conference, is rapidly finding its way into all human activities, and urban design and planning are no exception. The new agenda is now the design , development and management of sustainable human communities.

The projects are world-wide in origin (Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa), thus manifesting a global concern for such matters that trascend political and cultural barriers. The deliberate diversity of the selection takes account of the wide variety of conceptual approaches, scales, climatic and cultural responses, construction technologies, stylistic and formal stances, and even representation techniques shown. The intention is to provide the reader with a broad, quasi-kaleidoscopic picture of the different directions the growing discipline of EcoUrbanism is taking.

The list of architects and urban designers featured here ranges from pioneers such as Sergio Los, Peter Calthorpe and Lucien Kroll to leading names on the contemporary international scene such as Norman Foster, Peter Walker, Daniel Libeskind, Richard Rogers, SITE and Renzo Piano, and includes ecological organisations with a direct involvement in urban projects, such as Greenpeace.
