Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Edited byDemetrio Paparoni, who has followed the artist's work for over ten years, this imposing body of photographs includes a preface by artist Francesco Clemente as well as a critical anthology with texts by Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, Stephen Greco, Peter Halley, Christina Kelly, Wayne Koestenbaum, Demetrio Paparoni, Robert Pincus-Witten, Lou Reed, Jerry Saltz, Doug and Mike Starn and Mark Strand, and an autobiography in which the artist expands on the stages in his career.

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders Portraits is a bilingual edition with text in Italian and English. Printed in Italy, the generous 13 x 10 ins. book has 240 pages, with lush images printed in five colors and has a cloth bound cover with sleeve.

About the Author
Recognized world-wide for having created the most imposing catalogue of famous faces in recent times, American photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders offers over 350 intimate photographs including Mohammad Ali, David Bowie, David Byrne, Francesco Clemente, Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Willem de Koonig, Al Gore, Vaclav Havel, Jasper Johns, Monica Lewinsky, Toni Morrison, Lou Reed and Steven Spielberg to name just several. In his characteristically minimalist style, Greenfield-Sanders places his subjects before a dark background illuminated by a single light source. For each sitting, the artist takes only a few shots, structuring the formal layout and other details before the portrait is taken.

Greenfield-Sanders' signiture work is shot in super-large format with a 20 x 24 Polaroid camera and with his antique 11 x 14 inch view camera. His photographs have been compared to the work of Nadar and ANdy Warhol, and reflect art historical references to the great court portraits of Ingres and Rembrandt, as well as the religious imagery of Carravaggio. But Greenfiald-Sanders juxtaposes elements og these and other influences to generate a technique and phychological power that are entirely his own.

Greenfield-Sanders has worked on projects for major magazines including Time, Vanity Fair, index, Cover, and has been commissioned for major advertising campaigns. He has had more than thirty solo exhibitions around the world and his work is included in major private and public collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Cross-Section of an Era, September 6, 2001
I'm in one of the group shots in this book, so I'm an interested party, but even if I weren't I'd have to say that these are the definitive portraits of so many of my contemporaries (both famous and not or not yet famous) that a collection of them is long overdue. The printing and binding quality of this book, and its "bonus material" (essays, chronology, etc.), also help make it a necessary addition to any self-respecting art library. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Immortal Achievement, September 6, 2001
By A Customer
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is one of the great photographers of our age, and this extraordinary book of portraits places him among the true geniuses of the medium. These are more than great pictures; they expose the vibrant truth of their subjects. The portrait of William Burroughs, for example, is possibly the most brilliantly revealing study of a writer ever made. It is a shocking, even terrifying, achievement, because it reveals more of a man than one would have thought possible. This profound book is a journey in the deep forest of the human soul.
