Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Colombian presidential candidate Betancourt's face flooded the international media in the spring of 2002 when the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), the country's most powerful rebel group, kidnapped her at the height of her well-publicized campaign. This best-selling, controversially candid political memoir was originally published in French in 2001 and subsequently translated into 20 other languages. The book was first rejected for publication in Colombia because it hangs out national politicians' dirty laundry. In it Betancourt boldly accuses former president Ernesto Samper of taking money from drug traffickers to fund his campaign, and she implicates him in the deaths of several political opponents. Betancourt frankly describes the transitions in her life, as she moves from a charmed existence as the daughter of a Colombian ambassador stationed in France to political prominence when she returned to Bogota, where she worked her way up the political ranks as a representative and later as a senator in Colombia's national legislature. This gripping first-person account, which offers a unique perspective on Colombia's corrupt and noble politicians of the last decade, is filled with gripping passages that recount Betancourt's tense meeting with the heads of the Cali Cartel and the numerous death threats against her own life and that of her family. Given the author's current worldwide fame and uncertain status, this book is highly recommended to all libraries and bookstores. Adriana Lopez, "Criticas"

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELENTE, December 27, 2002
By A Customer
LEI ESTE LIBRO EN MENOS DE UNA SEMANA. SOY UNA LECTORA CONTINUA DE DISTINTOS TIPOS DE LIBROS. CONSIDERO QUE ESTE ES UNO DE LOS MEJORES QUE HE LEIDO. LA FORMA EN QUE ELLA PRESENTA LAS SITUACIONES DE SU DIARIO VIVIR COMO PERSONA POLITICA PUBLICA, COMO AMA DE CASA, MADRE, HIJA, Y SOBRETODO, CIUDADANA DE SU PAISES, DE SUMA REVELANCIA.
NO ES UNA NOVELA DE FICCION, SINO ES LA NARRACION DE HECHOS HISTORICOS RECIENTES NARRADOS DESDE UNA PERPECTIVA SUMAMENTE INTERESANTE.
ES UNA FORMA DE CONOCER LA POLITICA DE ESTE PAIS.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rage in my Heart, February 14, 2006
The Colombian conflict is difficult to understand, since it is basically an age old agrarian war that continues to be fought today. Instead of whipping out the factual, statisical histroy books, you only need to read two novels in order to get a good, firm grasp of the root of the problem. The first is Marquez's highly acclaimed Hundred Years of Solitude and the second is Ingrid Betancourt's second novel La Rabia en el Corazon. I read the book in Spanish, however it was originally written in French and has been translated into many different languages. Betancourt clearly and frankly lays out the more recent Colombian political history of corruption, drug cartels, politicians and their intricate, yet shameful links. In her book, she reveals the dark side to Colombian politics and her struggle to try and change the political spectrum and move Colombia closer to political democracy. Unfortunately Betancourt is currently being held hostage in Colombia (her husband is trying to launch an investigation into the government's role into the kidnapping).
Betancourt was a loud, clear voice of reason, honesty and pure belligerence in order to try and transform Colombia. They may have tried to silence her, but this book speaks volumes.

Full marks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingrid describes the real Colombia, August 23, 2005
This book is excellent. It goes right down to the heart of what's holding Colombia back in terms of economic progress, social development and its effort to obtain a real political democracy. It's all about corruption; corruption from the lowest to the highest levels of power; and a corruption that has pit one Colombian against another for years. This book is about Ingrid's tireless struggle to try to change all this, which is fascinating. But at times throughout the book, some sweeping generalizations are made implying that all politicians (for example, at the local level) are corrupt. We must not forget, however, that there are many other Ingrid's out there that don't have a national platform to spread their message or to make us stand up and take notice of their good work. Therefore, when reading this book, keep in mind that this is just one person's struggle, from one perspective. Ingrid knows Colombia extremely well and she has the courage to speak up, which should be applauded. By reading this book, you will defintely get a better insight into how the Colombian system really operates. Buy the book!
