5.0 out of 5 stars captures different Filipino views on a national issue, September 13, 2005
By carmine horizon (Philippines) - See all my reviews
In a well-written work of fiction, Lualhati Bautista captures the differing opinions that have held sway in the Philippines regarding the US military bases. More than being a political commentary, it shows us a glimpse into the Filipino consciousness, especially that of colonial mentality, [a desire for things "stateside"], abandoned Amerasian children, hopeful prostitutes waiting to be taken to the US etc.
14 years after the US left Olongapo and Subic, this novel still reverberates with relevance, in a time when agreements (VFA, Balikatan) between the Philippine and the US government are continually being forged, rehashed and repackaged.

As it was published in the Philippines, don't expect to have virgin-white high quality paper. It's printed on a newsprint-like paper (but of good enough quality). What can you expect with a 89-peso (around $1.80)tagprice in the Philippines?
