Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up-- This folktale is from the Guajiro, who live in the northeasternmost part of Venezuela. A man ventures out into the desert with his donkey, who encounters an evil Wanuluu and is injured in the violent fight that follows. The man sees the animal on the ground and leaves him there to die. The donkey is, however, magically transfigured into a cactus. The Guajiro eventually returns to the scene and stops to eat some of the plant's tasty fruit and is also transformed. The text is illustrated with full-page, alternating black-and-white and color illustrations that are captioned with a simple narrative. Because this is a regionalized folktale, a brief discussion of key vocabulary and a description of the Guajira region are listed at the end. A great tale for telling to older children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guajiro tale, June 1, 2001
By A Customer
This tale is not about Mexico, it is about Venezuela. It is a beautiful story that belongs to the native americans from Venezuela. It is sweet and sad at the same time and it has a very nice message. It also has great drawings and very simple text. It is great for people starting to learn Spanish.

This book is a great book to read to your bilingual classes! It talks about the Tall Tale of how the prickly pear came about in the deserts of Mexico. Your children will love the distinctive illustrations in the book!
