5.0 out of 5 stars a classic must-have, October 4, 2005
By Carol Lark (St. Louis, MO USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Any serious psychodrama student should have a copy of this student version (and most recent edition) of Moreno's classic in their library. But beyond psychodrama training, any student of social structures would benefit from a thorough reading of this ground-breaking text, originally published in 1934 and later in 1953 and 1978.This work was in the vanguard of sociology and social psychology as it developed prior to, during and following the Second World War. Moreno's contributions to these fields are enormous.

The student version, the subject of this review, contains a synopsis of Moreno's major contributions to theories and practice of sociometry and spontaneity, illustrated with diagrams ranging from the Canon of Creativity to social atoms, leadership structures, and complex social systems. The book provides a depth and range of description and discussion that truly grounds the reader. A list of 107 general hypotheses and a glossary complete the text.

Beyond the detailed descriptions of theory and method, Moreno's depth of thinking shines through as a beacon for those who seek to understand the complexities of human-social experience.
J.L. Moreno's contributions have never been more timely than they are now. His work looked forward to a time when the study of human societies would move across boundaries of culture and politics into a truly international field.

This book (published in 1993 by the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama, has been abridged and editted by Ann Hale, who was asked by J.L. Moreno to do so in 1973. This edition was reviewed and approved byZerka Moreno, who was the editor for the second and third editions of Who Shall Survive?

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for delineating group social anatomy., May 2, 1999
In l943 "Who Shall Survive"was utilized with startling success to delineate and graphically depict the social structure of a Quaker volunteer work camp. It could be very useful in analyzing situations such as that of Columbine, Colorado in l999.
