5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Soundtrack With Lots of Variety, July 5, 2000
By A Customer
When I first bought this soundtrack I was not really sure what to expect. Generally, soundtracks tend to have a lot of made for radio filler that does not have much to keep a listener coming back to the album. This is not so with the High School High Soundtrack. Every song seems as if it could have easily made the cut on the artists' own albums. The tracks have a certain underground edge to them while still maintaining mainstream tastes. My personal favorites are the Pete Rock & Large Professor song, the Inspectah Deck & U-God song, and the A Tribe Called Quest track. I am not quite as elated with some of the R&B songs but I'm sure that they will suit most people just fine. There are no tracks that I honestly say that I dislike; although I was slightly dissapointed with the De La Soul song (I think they are capable of much better material). If you want a compilation of quality material that can be listened to straight through with minimal use of the fast forward button, then the High School High Soundtrack is a great addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth it for 2 tracks, December 9, 2007
By Fiona Lynn (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
These two tracks make it worth it:
The De La Soul track, I Can't Call It is AMAZING. It shares the lyrical style from their first three albums but the production is later (no samples) and has these wonderfully funky low synth tones reminiscent to their OOOH single. I think this is one of their best tracks post Buhloone Mindstate.

The Inspectah Deck/U-God track is also incredible. Amazing flows and production style is near perfect. This would have been a perfect track for the classic Enter the Wu Tang 36 Chambers (although this probably wasn't made until way after).

Other notable tracks, but definitely par at best, Krs-One, Large Prof. & Pete Rock, and maybe the Sadat X & Grand Puba. The rest are horrible--complete throwaways--and that's why they're not on real albums. I am a huge fan of, or was, of many of these artists but they simply don't deliver on this album (i.e.- the Erykah Badu & D'Angelo cover track of the Marvin Gaye song is embarrassing. It was a shame too because I really love both these artists and wanted to like it. ********* But, for a really amazing track that is way too good to be buried on a soundtrack from these two, see: The 'Notic from the Men in Black Soundtrack. The Roots, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu together and it is nothing short of brilliant! They briefly cover Shining Star by Earth Wind and Fire and it is sooooo good.********)
